    Drivers problems

    Hey guys,

Well, I'm at my parents' for the weekend and my younger sister wanted to play Portal. She had done so on our computer, so we figured we'd install Steam on her's and let her play Portal while we're visiting.

Well, it gave the error about out-dated video drivers. We get that on our computer, too, but nothing bad ever happens (they're not that old!). Anyway, I guess these drivers are a little too old, and the games won't play properly at all.

My first mistake was installing Windows XP Professional drivers. D'oh. My mom's computer is Windows XP Media Center Edition. So, after getting the correct video drivers, it still gave an error...of which, I can't recall off-hand, but it was pretty weird. (I've never encountered it before, anyway)

So, I'm in the process of uninstalling and reinstalling both Steam (it was saying Steam was causing problems =\ ) and ATI Catalyst Control Center, and then the drivers will get reinstalled. I didn't back up the first ones.

So, hopefully (magically) Steam was just conflicting with the drivers. As of now, the computer doesn't even start up correctly. I have to choose "Use Last Known Good Configuration" at boot-up. Starting normally causes the computer to continuously restart.

Any ideas? I'm feeling awfully dumb at the moment for trying to let my sister play a game, and in the process have screwed this computer's drivers.

System restore to before you did anything to it, then update the ATI drivers.... Then install steam. That's what I would do.

If that PC has an Ati video card, you might want to try these drivers instead of the official ones:

Well, I'm not exactly sure what I did, but it's working again.

The error it was giving said: "Severe: Zero Display Service Error." I had to completely uninstall Catalyst. Once everything related to ATI was uninstalled, it booted up correctly, so it was just a matter of waiting around to install/download everything again.

Thanks for the quick replies, guys. Looking back, I'm pretty sure downloading drivers for the wrong operating system caused the problem. As soon as I got the correct ones, voila, it worked.
