WD AAKS Raid Edition. Not far from Raptor speed, higher in capacity, a lot lower in price.

I've written off buying any more WD hard drives now that they've dropped their standard warranty from 5 years (SE) or 3 years (standard) to a measly one year.
Seagate went the other direction and now upped their warranty from 3 to 5 years so that's what I buy. I've purchased over 1tb of Seagate drives in the past 4 months, so I don't have to worry about buying a drive for another 4.5 years.
I agree with the WD Raptor drives, but keep in mind the shorter warranty and the need for some good cooling on the drives. Either purchase HD coolers for each drive (they mount under the drive itself) or have a fan blowing over them in your case.

DO NOT stack them on top of each other in sandwich mode in your case. That leaves no room for heat dissipation between the two, and they will just cook each other to an early demise.

Hmmm i didn't know that about the warranty. I won't touch Seagate since they screwed over the .10 drives with bad firmwares.

My two WD drives are stacked. Bottom drive is running at 31c, top drive is running at 26c. These temps barely move even when defragging.

Since your going to install a raid array anyways why don't you spring for a third drive and do raid 5. You get data protection and just as fast I/O as raid0...if done in hardware.

Juneau, your WD drives are Raptors ??? Keep in mind you don't have an ordinary case. If someone sticks two Raptors in a generic case with no front intake fan blowing on them, they are gonna heat up in a hurry.

So RAID is faster than one drive alone ??

Tell me more folks, how much faster ??

I found this page useful. And it's reviews.

Maybe the Hitachi 7K1000 is the way to go.

But I'm really leaning toward the WD 750AAKS. Only a 1% difference from the raptor? As good as the 7K1000 and half the price.

Just standard drives. Tbh i would never touch a raptor.

i noticed that too WT. they hacked the drive warrenties. makes me mad in a way. my 750gb Mybook now has a 1 year warrenty. load of crap.. i love wd's drives due to stability, but if they are shortening the warrenty, t makes me question the long term stability of them. seagate's always been good to me, and with the exception of the the .10 drives with the bad firmware, the remainder i have'n't heard bad things about.

Cain, Raid IS faster, by a decent amount, DEPENDING on the configuration. there are a few modes out there, and most boards support the full 1,0,5+0,1+0, etc range.
