Wow, that e2180 that I just bought is dropping to $67.

Not that I care, seeing as how I got it for $50 (rebate better show up !!!) Granted, I assume thats the retail price, but I was never planning on using the stock Intel cooler anyhow.

Anyhoo, these drops are mainly for the 65nm chips, so I'm holding out for the 9450 pending MSI's confirmation that it will work on my 650i board.

Anybody else building something that they might wait on the price drops ?

You might be in for a little trouble WT

I've been reading that the 680i boards have issues with the Penryn processors, although who knows, this may not apply to the 650i.

I believe the February issue of Maximum PC has another article, but that's at home unfortunately right now, and it has not been added to the website yet. I'll take a look when I get home.

MaximumPC magazine, for those who DON'T know ( I can't imagine who wouldn't ) is one of the best PC mags ever put together.

Trooper, I've done my homework and checked already, and MSI has actually certified my board as of right now using the 1.5 BIOS (I just updated mine a month ago in preparation) for the 9550, which is a chunk of change more than the 9450, but regardless, they seem to indicate that its entirely feasible, as all it is compared to the 9450 is a different multiplier, maybe in this case a .5 multi instead of a rounded number.

If that falls through (doubtful) I'll either go for an 8500 or a Q6600.

MSI is actually on top of things for Penryn support, and while many 680i owners are left out in the cold, MSI had been actively testing any Penryns they can get their hands on, even on my 'old' 650i board.

Edit: OOPS, taking another look at the site, MSI seems to have set some of their previously 'Tested OK' processors to 'Under Testing' ..... hmmmm

The original information was that all 680i boards would be compatible with a BIOS update. This has since changed, it was in the article, but damned if I can remember why right now. AAAAAAAAAAAAAA, only 3 more hours and I can find out for sure what the issue is.

S'ok, Troop .. I have a subscription to Maximum PC as well, so I've read the article, but I am 100% positive the MSI page has changed since I looked at it 1 month ago when I got my BIOS update for my board. Now I'm sweating it out a bit after reading that .. the {H} has an over 100+ page thread on that board so I'll check out what is new in that thread later today.
