    Comcast Intermittent Connection Issues

First of all, let me say, Comcast is the ONLY option other than dial-up in my area. ( DSL is not even a remote possibility)

Lately I have been having intermittent connection issues, like it would drop occasionally for like an hour , and I get it back again. Sometimes I'd be fine for days and I'd forget about the previous issue.

I had techs come out to my house 3 times.

Also, anyone can be a tech support rep for cable internet these days.

    1. Unplug your moden
    2. Plug it back in.

Still something wrong? Send out a technician

What's worse is, once the problem ticket is dispatched and the dispatch center gets it...there's no "case #" issued, it's pretty much lost, and the call center doesn't know what goes on at the "other place" after that.

Technicians said the signals are fine at my place, they even replaced a whole new "Drop" at the telephone pole.

Upon Googling this...I find people who had the same problem, it'd work great for months, YEARS without a problem then they'd get a month or 2 of drops every few days. Some had seen "static" on the first few channels of their TV taht perhaps correlate that, I don't know.

BUt has anyone else heard stories when it comes to Comcast.

I remember even seeing complaints about this issue on DSL reports in years pasts on Comcast, but I found it odd that I never had problems.

(Yeah, the jerks at DSL reports won't even let you read forum posts, unless you're a PAID subscriber)

It seems that it's a consensus, that Comcast does NOT acknowledge it when it's a problem on THEIR end.

Perhaps a neighborhood wide problem or regional, but they just keep telling people to unplug/plugin their stupid modems that a monkey can do.

If that doesn't work, send a tech to the house.

Anyhow, anyone heard any stories oN Comcast connections?

I had the same thing some months ago. They tried to tell me it was problems in my home wiring. Well, I called Shenanigans on that (come on you anti-Shenanigan bunch: bring it on). My splitters, for example, were rated at 2.3 times the maximum of their splitters.

They ended up running a new drop to my house, and I've been ok since then. Before that step, they ran a new line over to my pc area under my rug to my tv, where I had one fewer split on the main line.

Comcast's signal doesn't like splits. I think they're pushing too much on their current network and aren't upgrading, unlike Verizon's investment in brand new fiber lines. Because of this, I think these issues are going to become more common, because they're trying to shoot too much data on antiquated lines. Then they blame us, the home consumers, for the problems.

Ah Comcast... How I love thee. I, too, can only get Comcast at my apartment. They are absolutely great for gaming. However, when it comes to downloading and uploading- they lack severely. Every time I download a couple of gigs they throttle my connection. It becomes slow and chunky. I bet you didn't know this, but if you download more than 250GBs a month they will slow down your connection to some impossible to use speed for the rest of the month. 250GB might be a lot to some casuals, but it's not for me.

As to that whole tech support thing, it really made me angry.

      "Hello, I have a problem"
"Can you unplug and replug your modem?"
      "Did it, didn't help"
"Are you free on Tuesday? We'll be sending out a technician."
      "FFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-"

To be fair intermittent issues like these could be caused by your neighbors using crap splitters or bad set top boxes.

You mean, someone's ELSE equipment on my blog can affect MY connection? Never heard of that.

Also, what are splitters exactly, I thought I had a splitter, but a Comcast tech told me I did not.

I just have a device that allows for multiple TV's to be hooked up to it...a coupler?

And a splitter actually splits the cable line

A splitter does not actually split the cable.
A splitter is a piece of hardware. The main cable is connected to one end of the splitter and then multiple lines are connected on the other side. You can actually have more than one splitter on a line.

how old is your modem? is it hot? i was having issues like this 2-3 years ago. It was my modem going out. it worked, but would randomly just dump me. bought a new modem, not an issue since.

If you buy a splitter, ignore Apache's photo.

You need at least 1 Ghz on the high end nowadays for digital signal.

I take it you never really had an older console system or needed to have multiple tvs in your house with cable? I've been using splitters since before I was 10 because of these situations.

Yes it can. If they have a bad physical connection or a settop box that produces lots of noise it can mess up everyones connection in the neighborhood. Remember with the advent of On Demand type of services it is a two way communication over a shared medium. So if they introduce lots of noise it can affect you. DSL doesn't have this problem

What is the Uptime on DSL? Because Comcast doesn't seem to go down THAT often. Anyone has experience with both connection types? My friend has a lame DSL connection and he downloads at 2MB/s which is pretty sick if you ask me.

Yes, with around 10 years I've been with Comcast, this is the by first the worst 2-3 months with Comcast.

Even a handful of my channels on the TV is actually out, too.

I've had a splitter (if that's what it is) forever, so that can't really be it. Because I've that splitter forever, with no internet issues.

I swapped out for a brand NEW modem, too. A tech guy is coming out tomorrow, so we'll see what happens.

The only down time I ever had was when my old modem went bad. They sent me a new one free with wired and wireless conection.

I had some issues that were solved by a firmware update.

Well not to long ago I had some crazy cable internet issues. Instead of getting my 15 megs down I was getting barely one meg down. I had techs come to my house 7 or 8 times before it was resolved. They replaced all the cable and connections in my house. They replaced the line that led to the street, they even replaced the connections in the road. They swapped out three modems before it was fixed. Turned out it was a modem issue, two out of the three were bad. Now I get 15-16 megs down solid. What mapes said was true. If you have bad connections or a bad splitter, frequency interference will affect your service. Splitters do go bad, always use splitters provided by your service provider, aftermarket can cause problems.
