I still have a bunch of HDDs downstairs that I need to get rid of. I haven't thought of shooting them. I think I ask my father if that's allowed at his club.

Yeah I have great boot on this "forensic discovery"

Truly intriguing what data you can pull off. Even after writing 0s to the drive over and over. Apparently they can read thin slices between the tracks to get the original values....

imo the best thing to do with old drives is to buy an external housing with USB or FireWire support and then get a long cord, and run it under your desk. Unless you dont want to keep the drive then DL a free program like "Drive nuke" (one we had to use @ school to get some old comps running again) and wipe that drive.

If I ever need to ditch a hard drive because someone is after it im going to smash it up into pieces and start mailing/throwing the pieces all over. Go and mail a piece to each state and then toss some pieces in towns within driving distance so people cant track the mailing.

Take the drive apart and then throw it in a box of refrigerator magnets.

                Thats what I do.

I have a rubbermaid tub of refrigerator magnets of all sized and etc. I have seperated the magnets and over the years, everytime someone has given us one, I just break out the magnet and throw it in there.

When a drive is done, I de-assemble it and throw it in there and shake it up. I leave it in there for awhile. In fact, I have a few in there right now.

Every once in awhile I shake the box, pull out the pieces, unstick the magnets, run them over the platters again a few times, then toss them in and shake the container again.
