    Ubuntu ruins makes woman fail?

    http://www.wkowtv.com/Global/story.asp?S=9667184

Personally I'm chalking it up to ignorance, laziness, and/or stupidity. There's plenty of alternatives to Office, and I've never heard of any ISP where you HAVE to install their idiotic disks.

her problem is she knew nothing about computers. I'll bet she never once asked a friend who might know something about it. That may be a bit unfair on my part considering i have yall here and a lot of the guys in my fraternity are computer engineers.

and why couldnt she just go to the local library to do this stuff. I can understand not being able to take physical classes because of time constraints or what have you, but if she has time to sit on her own personal computer, she probably has time to go to the library to do some work too. The only reason i can see that she might not be able to is she works like 3 jobs 7 days a week and her only free time is at midnight. if this is the case, she should seriously rethink some of her decisions.

Read through the comments, they're ripping both the woman and the news agency a new one.

Which is the wrong thing to do. I agree the woman's stupidity should be pointed out and this reporter obviously filed this story with the thought of sensationalism. I mean really did he think geeks are the most quiet nonflaming posters in the world.

What the open source community should do is offer to help her set her system up. I mean what could be a better coup than that. I could just see the headline.

Actually, along with the rants and flames, there's quite a few offers of help as well as pointers on where to get help.

Just another example of idiots reporting on idiots. It would be nice if the positive responses would get some people to look into the free options out there and become independent but I doubt that will happen.

You'd think that the IT guy at the station would have stepped up and said something like "I can fix this in about an our". Look at the bright side, if this is the worst they couold find to report on then yay for Madison, Wisconson.

You guys need to go see another fishpond.

Imagine a world where you knew no one who had ever heard of Linux or Ubuntu or whatever.

"Its the new thing to do " so you do it.
And then you have to learn a new culture of operating system. By yourself.

Well- failing the class because you failed to go down to the bookstore and get the Ubuntu for dummies book, or whatever -- well that says alot about your own personal motivation.

Let's pick on someone I know who works very hard. Does anyone in here think that Blackarrow would just sit back and let the failure happen? NO! Dudes (and dudettes)! BA would go to the library, borrow a laptop or PC to take the classes, and while doing all that, he would be reading a "how to get your Ubuntu on with l33tn3ss" until he understood how to use the solution.

BA would have probably returned the computer or swapped the OS immediately anyways though- recognizing that time management limited his learning time for an OS plus the onlnie education....

Let me sum it up for everyone here- because I think it is simple.

                  We are born.
We are raised (by family, friends, and or community)
                  Then we are adults.

At that last junction point, it is your responsibility- even if you buy something you are not qualified for. Fairness does not create the necessity for every business to educate their consumers on every product- Ubuntu doesnt kill anyone (except maybe polar bears when used in conjunction with Google), so why does Dell have to educate anyone on this?

Too bad- you failed. You made a bad call, compounded it by not correcting it immediately, dropped out of your classes, and then found a piece of low hanging fruit to blame your failure on.

The reality is that people fail more often by sheer will than by circumstance. And that is my take on things.

Plan, execute, review. This lady cant even get started so of course she'll never be able to execute.

Good point Hammy... It's about taking responsibility for your actions. She was careless about ordering the product and then blamed Dell for touting that "Ubuntu was great". What they probably said was something like "Ubuntu can do whatever it is you need, you just have to learn how to use it".

The only thing I disagree with you on(theres always something ) is this

You don't have to go it alone. There are tons of places to find help...just kill some polar bears....

If he had done his job in the first place he wouldn't have looked as ignorant as he did and now his blog post brings him down to the level of the people he is complaining about. Whats must be bothering him is that the most attention he has gotten came from bad reporting.
