Friend join?

When I see someone online, the Join Friend and play with them is
greyed out for me. Is that true for everyone? Or do I have an option
setting wrong somewhere???

I don't have the game so this is only a presumption. Maybe the friend has the game loaded but isn't in a server?

Correct. Unless they are actually in a server it will be dithered.

It was highlighted for me the other night when sending out invites.

Can anyone USE this function since the last patch? Every time I find a friend online and try to Join, I crash to desktop.

From Steam, I cannot join anyone that is online playing.
That is the problem.

You can SEE them online.. Although sometimes like me, i'll leave myself semi logged in, and still show logged in, even though i'm at work...

I haven't figured out how to add FRIENDS list inside the game yet.
