...you get the service stars for vehicles after getting all the unlocks and again every time you hit whatever points level that was.

For armor, it's every 100,000 points. I can tell you now I will not have the 100 service stars for armor dog tag. It took me about 7 hours to get to this level between both armies. I seriously doubt I'll play the game in total more than 450 or so hours, so no way I make 700 hours in armor.

DICE wasn't kidding when they said it would take a long time to get some of the awards.

The medals that I read were not that hard to get. i.e. 50 hours as Recon. I think my biggest problem is getting the other "receive 50 ribbons" for Rush, TDM and so on.

This is however a game for the ages. Not giving up on it any time soon.
