Wireless Router, with only 1 PC

Is there a way to set up a wireless network, but you only have one laptop/computer you want to wander freely about the house.

Seems the instructions say you STILL have to plug your computer into one of the 4 Ports anyhow. Can't be wireless that way now can it? lol

Upon further reading, they make it sound like you need to do you Setup or Configuration while your laptop is hardwired to the wireless router, after you get it all set up, you can feel free to disconnect your laptop and move freely about your house?

that is correct after you setup the wireless first with the setup wizard.

To setup the router im guessing you would connect a cat5 cable to the router from your computer and do the initial setup.
To secure your network and only use one computer on it just enable mac address filtering and enter the wireless NIC's mac address into the mac address table of the router.
Make sure you secure your router and don't leave it open, change the default password, disable ssid broadcast (once you have it setup on your computer), and enable wpa2. Nothing wireless is ever secure but try to make at as secure as you possibly can.

OK, so what if you only had a wireless router and an iPad? How would you set up the wifi in that case?

It may be possible to connect wirelessly to the router's config page by typing in the IP address on the router. If not, I guess you would have to use the default settings, which will let anyone connect to the router that wants to.

most consumer wireless routers will broadcast without any connection restrictions by default. on your client go into wireless setup and look for the broadcasting router. choose it and after you are connected simply log into the GUI and configure it how ever you desire.

If the router is wireless only and there are no TP ports then it's configured out of the box to be unsecure so you can connect wirelessly and configure it.

If the router is wireless with TP ports (usually 4), then it's usually configured to only be configured using the one TP port and you can configure from there. Some of them will have the wireless configured out of the box to allow wireless connections.

Security! It's not a wise choice now a days to buy a wireless only and leave it in the default settings.
