The only thing I back up is my pictures, videos, and documents folder. (and some save game info) I figure if the HDD crashes it is a good excuse to do an OS reinstall. I use Carbonite and Acronis.

I lost my ten year MP3 collection a year or so ago and my 640GB E: drive has just failed again. Time to look at some of these I think!

I agree. That type of loss is scary enough to me that I rotate between 2 backup hard drives (using one for a couple months than switching back to the other to restart the process). Big drives are cheap compared to how much of my life is digital.

THat's why I use Carbonite. In my experience external HDDs have a higher failure rate than internal ones. With carbonite, all of my pictures, mp3s, movies, and documents are instantly backed up.

Even online backups aren't safe. On professional photographer lost over 25,000 of his photos when the company he used for online back up folded and did not give him enough time to save his work.

I don't use them as my primary storage. I have:
              1. Internal storage (primary)
              2. External HDD (main backup)
              3. Online backup

If I were to lose all 3 that would be some serious bad luck.
