Comcast wants to set you up as their wireless hot spot !

First piloted in the Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Northern Virginia, and the Greater Washington, DC metro area regions, the program turns customers' routers into quasi-public Wi-Fi access points.

While only open to subscribers, and requiring a password-authenticated connection, Comcast subscribers can now access a portion of their neighbor's bandwidth.

Customers can opt out by refusing Comcast's special "Gateway" and buying their own cable modems/routers. Alarmingly, though, Comcast reportedly will not give any special warning (say a mailed noticed) to customers with its Gateways before turning their devices into public access points.

Wow, what a pathetic plan. Glad I turned to ATT... lesser of two evils.

Good thing I don't trust the bastards as far as I can throw them with wireless and only have the modem. Alternate firmware running on my own router ftw.

Bought my cable modem rather than lease, so I am good to go. Still, I have always hated Comcast due to these types of plans that they hatch.

Well, you are already sharing bandwidth if you use Comcast... Plus, who would use the shitty built-in wireless routers that come in the modems?

I don't mind this, as long as I'm not responsible for what goes over said wifi points. Liability goes to Comcast!

But it won't happen because I have the option to not only use my own modem but it doesn't have wifi capability. Even if it did... Basement. They aren't getting any signal out there unless I want them to. Problem solved.
