Please help me to decide on my next Intel PC build....

    Hi everyone!

I'm planning to buy a new PC within the next months. Though I can't decide which road to take.

    Current System:
GPU: Sapphire Toxic, AMD 6850, 1 GB
    CPU: Intel i7-920 @ 3.0 GHZ
    Cooler: Alpenföhn
    RAM: 3x2, GB DDR 3 1333
    BOARD: ASUS P6T Deluxe V2
HDD: SSD Intel X-25 M Series, 80 GB
    PSU: Be quiet! 450W

    Next Gen System A:
GPU: AMD 7970, 8xxx or NVidia 770, tbd
CPU: Intel i7-4770K (out now) or 4771 (to be released around October)
    Cooler: tbd
    Board: ASUS Z87-Deluxe, Intel Z87
    RAM: Corsair Vengeance, 2x8 GB, DDR3 2133
HDD: SSD Intel S3700 Series, 200 GB
PSU: Be quiet! Dark Power PRO 10, 650W

    Next Gen System B:
GPU: AMD 7970, 8xxx or NVidia 770, tbd
CPU: Core i7-4930K (to be released around September)
    Cooler: tbd
Board: ASUS P9X79 DELUXE, Intel X79
    RAM: Corsair, DIMM 16 GB, DDR3-2133, Quad-Kit
HDD: SDD Intel S3700 Series, 200 GB
PSU: Be quiet! Dark Power PRO 10, 650W

    SOCKET 1150 - Haswell System:
    Pro:
    - Less Power Consumption
    - Newer Socket
    - AVX2
    - Somewhat cheaper

    Cons:
    - iGPU (most AMD iGPUs are still better, also obsolete for 90% of builds)
    - Even hotter than Ivy-Bridge, almost no OC (even with a K cpu)
    - Only 4 Cores (this is 2013 not 2009!)

    Socket 2011 - IVY-BRIDGE-E System:
    Pro:
    - 2 more Cores
    - No usless marketing iGPU
    - More reliable system, probably better OC results

    Cons:
    - Even more expensive
    - Outdated Socket

    Side Node:
Special thanks to Intel for slowing down desktop PC progress over the last 4 years! If my Dad woudn't need a new PC, I wouldn't upgrade at all.

What kind of build would you prefer? Any thoughts?

    Thanks in advance
    Grisu

TO be honest, you will probably get the best performance out of Ivy Bridge-E. The way Intel changes sockets, I wouldn't consider it "outdated" because the upgrade path for Intel CPUs isn't usually worth it. I have a 2500K, and I was planning on replacing it with an Ivy Bridge, like a 3770k. The increase in performance isn't really worth the price. I will have to say that is my biggest gripe against Intel. Once you are ready for an upgrade (that is actually worth upgrading to) you have to buy a new motherboard because it is likely on a new socket.

For desktops, Haswell isn't really that much of a jump over Ivy Bridge, so the extra cores in the Ivy Bridge-E, along with having more PCIe lanes for SLI, etc. make it a viable option. Of course, Ivy Bridge-E isn't out yet, so I can't say for sure.

I'm in the same boat Grisu. However i think I've made my decision. Haswell, for most, only brings future upgrades to the table. That is it.

However, if you're like myself and only upgrade your CPU once every 3-4 years this new socket will be redundant by then anyways, and these new CPU's don't age half as quickly as they used to do. 3 years down the line your PC won't be showing its age too badly.

I'll be picking up a 3570K as a part of my new build starting in Aug. I'll also be going m-atx and downsizing my rather large MountainMods case.

Ps, good seeing you in TF2.

Thanks guys. I will wait for the Ivy-Bridge E.

By then they should have fixed the Haswell motherboard chipset too.
So if a Socket 2011 system is too expensive, I still could get a little benefit from waiting a while longer.

@Juneau: Sorry to disappoint, but I don't play much these days. So you won't see me in TF2.
