Would you rather have 2 men building a house or 4? 4 hands compared to 8. Same with your clock speeds. I'd rather have 4x1600mhz than 2x1600mhz. Split the work between them.

And they look much better than having 2 empty slots. Most motherboards have 4 DIMMs.

Fewer modules with higher capacity is almost always preferable. Besides the fact that it leaves you room for future upgrades if necessary, 4 sticks puts more strain on the memory controller and chipset. It would also actually take longer for the CPU to add and retrieve data from 4 sticks than 2 (though the difference is negligible)

I read this explanation from a user named garycase at "The Hyphenated Site" a while back when researching my PC:
    Quote Originally Posted by garycase
Most desktop systems use unbuffered RAM modules -- this results in very large loads on the address and data buses when you have more than two modules installed, and can significantly degrade the signalling on these buses. The memory subsystem "sees' one load per memory chip -- so with two modules installed, that's up to 32 loads (with double-sided modules) ... and with four modules installed that's as many as 64 electrical loads on the bus. Some systems automatically adjust for this higher load by either increasing the voltage a small amount; reducing the clock frequency of the memory (thus slightly slowing it down); or by adding a cycle to the SPD's latency setting (again, slightly slowing it down). These adjustments help keep the memory subsystem reliable -- but mean that 4 x 1 GB modules would be slightly slower than 2 x 2 GB modules on these systems. But regardless of whether there's any timing differences, the memory will definitely be more reliable with only two modules.
I'd go with fewer, larger sticks if the price is comparable.

Thanks Blackjack, my rationale was leaving two slots open for future upgrades. It is interesting to note that this also has performance benefits as well.

Cain, before you go spending your hard earned money, I have a pretty decent rig for sale. I can offer a very fair price. See below.

That's what Im currently playing BF4 beta in. It's a little sluggish but hopefully the release client will be more stable. 10/10 would get scammed again.

Mathematically this formula is not always true.
Using your example: If one man can build a house in 30 days, then 30 men should be able to build a house in one day.

Cain you should enjoy the Maximus VI. I have had the Maximus IV Extreme Z for two years and it has been a great MB.

Huh... did not know that. I don't think you're going to upgrade from 16GBs of RAM to 32. Unless you plan on editing and rendering a 3D feature movie.

I want DDR5! Why does my graphics card have DDR5 but we're still sitting on DDR3. Are they really that different? Apparently, I don't know anything about ram (I don't).

I just sort of sit here weeping. The SSD or the Video Card alone amount to half the cost of my current set-up, which does a fairly good job on BF4 most of the time.

You should do well Cain, but man, I'm jeally. Probably more so for the SSD than for that monster of a video card.

If the above spec was mine some of the parts would be in the 'I can afford it so I'll buy it' category. The 1TB SSD being a prime example hehe. I see it as unnecessary, however Cain must not.

100% correct. I was never able to play BF3 very well. While building the last PC money was very tight as I was starting my Company.

This time I'm building a PC I know damn well should chew this game up and spit it out!!

Juneau I'm probably gonna drop back to a 750G SSD, I am tired of running out of space on my 275G current primary HD, but 1G may be a little large.

Why not run both an SSD and a normal hard drive. Put your boot up main programs on the SSD. Keep your files like videos/pictures that you want to save for future on the normal hard drive.

    I run:

1x 120GB SSD for OS, Apps that load with OS, Apps that benefit greatly (BF4)
1x 1TB HDD for All other apps and games. Most games don't actually benefit being on a SSD due to the large filesizes.
    1x 1TB HDD for media.

    Soon:

    1x 2Bay NAS with 2x 3TB WD Reds.

I'm similar to Juneau. I'm running a 120 GB SSD for my OS only, and whatever limited stuff installs with the OS. I've got about 37 GB free so that should give me room to stick BF4 on it.

RAID 1 mirror with twin 1TB HDD for my apps and games, media, Win user directory, etc.
Backup 1TB HDD for even more redundancy.

I've lost 3 HDDs in my computing life. I'm BIG on redundancy as a result. I've got two external HDDs at home, one is a 1TB that I copy major files to once every few months. Given more funds I'd buy a 1TB My Passport drive, back up EVERYTHING I care about, and leave it in my safe deposit box. I'm protected now against drive failure but not against fire.
