I do have quiet a few relatives in the military from Army National Guard to Marine Corps to serving on nuclear boats in our submarine program, and I talk with them quite a bit, as well as do a lot of reading. Identifying that much information would be guaranteed to get an airman in trouble with command, as I'm sure would "taunting" the "enemy."
And a further addition: http://message.snopes.com/showthread.php?p=830609
Read through, there's an actual response from a Marine aviator in it.
As for truth or not, I've seen funnier crap first hand riding along in a squad car. True Example:
We [4 guys +1 one escort police officer] were out looking for a sex offender who failed to register in his county. We had gotten a tip from a convenience store guy that this guy buys smokes there at least once a week.
We did a search and figured out a few blocks away is a relatives house, so we went out there. While we were out, the dispatcher calls to inform us that the man said he's going to kill us after we had just left his mother in-laws residence. The officer who is tagging along radio's back "Tell him we'll be at the corner of [two street cross section] waiting for him."
For a few minutes I actually thought this guy would show up. I mean who is dumb enough to call the police department from a pay phone and say "I'm going to kill the police officer who just knocked on my Mother-In-Laws house"?
My team didnt catch him that day- he turned himself in before we could find him and claimed he had "forgotten" to register after moving.

Sorry if I came off as hostile Hammy, I really didn't mean to. Was just stating facts and giving some background information.

I know, and work with, plenty of military jet jockeys and I could totally see this happening. I can also see the commanders covering it up too because it's not good conduct.
@ Rye. Fighter pilots are, by nature, a bit cocky and if this guy was there saying this then good for him. The fact that we have superior equipment and training is just a bonus and it's nothing to be ashamed of.

Just my opinion, and somewhat faulty memory.
We fought in WWII against superior dogfighting airplanes until the P51 and such were available, and still did well if I recall.
Korean war, the MIG was a much superior dogfighting jet, but we still had a positive K/D ratio.
Vietnam war, the Phantom was a brick compared to the Mig's, but again, a positive K/D.
Training, skills, want to. Get-er-done attitude.
The Radio message could entirely factual, or could be an embellishment, or plain BS, but it STILL makes you feel warm and fuzzy. I work with Ex military every single day, and whatever branch they were proud to be a member of, they STILL have that Get-Er-Done mentality, and Come and Get it attitude. lol

It's not about being politically correct, it's about identifying yourself to a potential enemy. By telling who you are and what you're flying you just gave him a wealth of information that he could potentially use against you. That's the main reason why I think this is a "feel good" story, not a true one.

Another reason we won the air war in WWII was because we didn't keep sending our aces up. As soon as we identified a pilot who had something more than good marksmanship he was yanked back to the states to train our guys. Germany and Japan both lost their best pilots in combat. The days of the dogfight might be over as far as the US is concerned. I can't divulge any classified information but anyone who thinks they can fly in our air is just gonna get punked. Yes we still teach air to air combat but I don't think we will need it.
