It's not the first time it happend, and in this area you have the risk factor calculation. In fact, you lose quite a bit of materials and tooling while drilling even the most basic wells.
I doubt that they got fired, and it I know the energy companies, they are leasing the bore to the scientists that wish to study it- so revenue in no matter what. -
