I was just thinking that this guy and maybe this student are probably Mac users so choices and options aren't even on their radar.

Dude- leave your pond. Leave your intellectual gene pool for a minute. This person obviously doesnt have good lateral thinking skills. Thats all I am saying. Imagine Grandma on AOL. Take away AOL and suddenly she cant get to the internet- see?
My mom had comcast but would still connect via dial up to AOL until one day I saw her do it and I was like "What the heck?!"
Case and point. People with technological limitations that are behind more than two generations struggle to catch up. Ubuntu is another hurdle.
I like the point that was made about Mac users. No offense to anyone who has them, but they are plug and play systems- fantastic in my opinion for anyone who just wants to plug it in and go.

The reporter's blog is hilarious. He just completely destroys any hope he may have had of getting into a larger market.
The comment line that leans toward recommending the woman not attend college are pretty much dead on though. If she can't figure this one out without dropping out of school and bringing in the local news, the kind of independent thought that higher education requires is going to be a struggle.
At the very least, the school itself would have some IT guys, and they would have been able to help her out. Where's the mention of that?

Fact of the matter is, everyone is accountable for their words, even the local scrap newsletter down at the local pub

It was a consumer advocate on a "local news channel" for TV. It's like turning on NBC to get the news, everyone gets the national news from the same people, then you local news with the local station's team comes on. This was from the local station, showed across a wide area, from the consumer advocate, blaming Dell and Ubuntu for keeping this woman from college.
There's been a heck of a lot more going on, go read up on it a little more, look in to some of the commentaries, there's a lot that the woman didn't tell, and that the news was too stupid or lazy to look in to.
Lineman...maybe he wasn't trying to bash Ubuntu, but that's how it came across when he accused it and Dell of causing this woman's problems. She and they did no research and just jumped to conclusions, and from what I've been reading and looking in to, the woman in question didn't do very much at all...she's had the laptop since this past summer.....

Here's a question: can you even get a Dell from their site with Ubuntu without changing the default OS?
Perhaps she bought from Dell Outlet, where this is indeed possible if you don't look closely enough, but I'm not sure if this was ever possible on the Dell (new) site.

Haven't tried it myself, but from what I read and what coworkers said you can't even buy it with Ubuntu as the default, you have to change it to that from Vista. And the Dell site still has that annoying colored crap telling you that Dell recommends Vista as your OS.
