In many cases the criminals are the last ones to get charged with anything. I feel that one one participates in a crime, folks should be able to do anything within their means to stop you. And if the criminal gets hurt or offended as a result, I would call that a bonus.

However, knowing the dangers posed by the legal system when one is trying to defend their self or their property, I suppose I might just have removed the keys from the van...and taken a seat next to it with my police shotgun in hand, just in case things get ugly.

Most of the time defending yourself or your property will get you thrown in jail, as you can be charged for assault/ manslaughter/ murder even in self defense....

If he had access to the keys- why didnt he just shut the car down, take the keys, and call the cops?

Every state is different when it comes to self defense.
Most do require that you attempt to flee if you have the means and ability to do so. You do not have to flee if you are in your own home or on your own property. Most states use the reasonable man theory of self defense. Would a reasonable man feel he was in fear for his life in the same situation. And remember a 6'5" 225 lbs man is going to be different than a 5'0" 98 lb woman. Also, defense means defense. If you subdue the assailant that is it. If you continue you then become the aggressor and can be charged with assault. For example if you take a knife away from your attacker and he stops or attempts to flee then you must stop. If you then chase him down and stab him you will go to jail for attempted murder or murder.
These are just general and each state is different. It would not hurt you to look up your states laws regarding self defense and commit them to memory.

All you need is a clean handgun that can't be traced and you put it on the guy after you put him out of his misery.

Not always true. In most states they have what are called Castle Laws (a mans house is his castle). In those states you are not obligated to flee from your own home.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
