We still don't have powerful enough instruments, either for detecting electronic signals, or imaging earth sized planets. And then the question remains, how many alien species exist in places we'd never think to look for life....a methane lake, a sulfur lake, heck, even asteroids. There's so many possibilities, just based on earth, that we could be overlooking something right in our own solar system.
