Metallica's Lars Ulrich "pirates" Metallica album

Metallica His Own Album | TorrentFreak

I find this hilarious when he's the one who's always been such a pita about everything to do with digital distribution. Can't wait till he gets caught pirating more

Well technically, he didn't pirate as he owns the original. I thought it was only considered illegal if you don't already own a copy of what you are downloading.
[this is where my funky sig would go. But I don't have one.
So all you get is this crappy text]

      Yeah,

Looks like he was just trying it out (I'm sure he already has a copy, maybe even autographed!). You know, kind of a "know one's enemy" thing.

Actually, I know how it sounds cool in the online community to be "pro" torrent theft, anti microsoft, sympathetic of AMD, interested in Linux and Ubuntu, and etc., but give me a break please.

He already admitted that it was a mistake to attack people and Napster the way he did. He also admitted to hindsight being 20/20 and not acknowledging the technology of "today". I think his direct quote was "like a parent of his child, I forgot my place and became my father for a moment in time."

Have a laugh, enjoy yourself and point as pointedly as you like. Its old news and not really a striking "OMFG **GASP HE DID WHAT?**"

Twink, he may not own the original. Typically, the record company will retain rights to the musician's music unless they are able to buy it back from the company.

Regardless, he would not approval from anyone else with writing credits before claiming he had the 'rights' to do so. Its a sad fact that the recording companies have so much leverage over their artists that the artist, basically to make ends meet, needs to turn over their rights to their music just to put food on the table.

I don't know if I can have a laugh, cause of him and others, Napster; one of the best sites to get free music along with Scour at the time, now charges for music and Scour is now a stupid search engine. Now he pirated his own music???

Well guys I do think that artist should be paid for what they make so I don't get all upset about it. The trick is how to go about it.

I like Lars and if he wants to pirate his own music then, to me, it's OK. Now if he were downloading a Beyonce tune then I would say LOL.

Honestly, you should get in trouble for downloading "free" music. It's not free, you're obtaining it in an illegal manner. I do think that the labels charge too much, so that they can keep up their own profits. I think the RIAA is abusing the system and creating illegal/fraudulent lawsuits. I honestly think the RIAA should be disbanded. Unfortunately for artists however, labels are still the best way to get "known" or make any money, as they have the contract and advertising dollars that even word of mouth on the internet can not match.

I just find it funny that he admits to pirating one of his own songs after being so militantly anti-digital distribution, as well as his views on dealing with illegal downloads.

Whoa Hammy just whoa ...do not equate using open source operating systems to piracy. Thats not fair. Arguably one of the coolest things to spur innovation in technology was that the Regents of the University of California allowed BSD out of the box. They allow anyone to do anything with it. In fact their's was one of the first TCP/IP stacks implementations and its rumored that hints of that stack are in cisco routers and pretty much any MS TCP/IP stack.

When it comes to MS the only time I extremely dislike them is when they use industry standards as a attack vector vs their competition. They're notorious embrace and extend mentality to industry standards has been horrible. Other than that I'm ok with em...Oh yeah CIFS is a horrible POS of a protocol but, what are you going to do.

I agree with you that tartist should be paid and yeah it's nice he might be seeing the light on different business models and that he might be changing his view point but, there is a certain amount of irony in it. However your right it's not a big deal.

When Napster first came out wasn't it people giving their music away by sharing it and therefore you could get music for free? I don't know because I never used it.

Most first contracts reaaly favor the label over the artist. When an artist hits it big then they usually get to set the terms on their subsequent contracts. They just start shopping for a label that will give them what they want. One hit wonder artists usually leave the business like they came in, broke.

                        LMAO- actually it is fair.
I actually said "Torrent theft" Which already implies piracy.

The best part, the one that made my day, is that its okay for you to associate Limbaugh as the voice and reason of the GOP but you are offended that open source was mentioned in the same sentence as piracy.....even though you took it out of context for your own purpose.:d

Glad I made someones day! I certainly see your point how I took it out of context. My point was they're have been open source OS's (BSD) even before MS windows, MS DOS or piracy on the internet for that matter.
