    To Whom It May Concern...

Found this in an old folder on my computer.

PEOPLE OVER 30 SHOULD BE DEAD

According to today's regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were kids in the 40's, 50's, 60's, or even maybe the early 70's probably shouldn't have survived.

Our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paint. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets, and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets. (Not to mention the risks we took hitchhiking.)

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags. Riding in the back of a pickup truck on a warm day was always a special treat. We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle. Horrors!

We ate cupcakes, bread and butter, and drank soda pop with sugar in it, but we were never overweight because we were always outside playing. We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle, and no one actually died from this.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then rode down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day. No cell phones. Unthinkable!

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo 64, X-Boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, video tape movies, surround sound, personal cell phones, personal computers, or Internet chat rooms. We had friends! We went outside and found them. We played dodge ball, and, sometimes, the ball would really hurt. We fell out of trees, got cut and broke bones and teeth, and there were no lawsuits from these accidents. They were accidents. No one was to blame but us. Remember accidents?

We had fights and punched each other and got black and blue and learned to get over it. We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and ate worms, and although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes, We rode bikes or walked to a friend's home and knocked on the door, or rang the bell or just walked in and talked to them.

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment.
Some students weren't as smart as others, so they failed a grade and were held back to repeat the same grade. Horrors! Tests were not adjusted for any reason. Our actions were our
own. Consequences were expected. The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law. Imagine that!

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers and problem solvers and inventors, ever. The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all. And you're one of them!

    Congratulations.

Please pass this on to others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before lawyers, government and the parents who want society to babysit their kids regulated our lives, for our own good...

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors?

I am a young person, and I enjoyed that. But a few things:
I drink out of hoses, have never had a cell phone, never worn a helmet when riding a bike, and there are still plenty of fights that dont lead to grudges and someone getting shot/stabbed.

I'm so lucky I guess. I always did whatever I wanted without my parents worrying. I guess I was born a little late but a still enjoyed the same freedoms! Thanks to traditional parents. Only thing is...I did have the games and tv. But never used them when I was little.

Bah. This is the typical, "remember when?" kind of thing. I think there is a bad country song or 3 written to this effect.

I think author could've summed it up by writing "progression sucks".

There is a difference between progression and people being over protective.

Seat belts, non-lead based paint, child proof lids, and bike helmets are over protective?

I should have worded what I said different. What I ment to say is that people are overprotective. sure, the lead-free paint is a good thing, but kinds don't even get outside anymore. Partially because of TV and games, partially because their parents what to know where they are and what they are doing 24/7. The kids then turn and see this is "Well, I don't want to have to bother with telling them everything all the time, so i'll simply sit at home and play my games".

That is a very broad generalization.

from what i've seen it seems to hold true. You've probably seen different though. Why don't we simply agree to disagree.

                        Sounds good!

I was only trying to offer up a different interpretation of this "good old days" bit.

not to take sides, but i think the point being made is that we as a society have become too lazy to think about this stuff & watch our kids. so, we invent things to make them easier, safer, etc so we don't have to pay attention any more. the changes came as there was a need for them. but the need developed from people in general becoming too lazy etc.

When the mouse gets smarter, you build a better mouse trap. and you keep doing so.

somethings came about and really needed to be. things like stopping forcing cocaine & mercury down peoples thoats, lead based paint, etc are all good things, but not everything really truly needed to be, until we created a need for them. just like in 50 years, we'll be saying the same things to our kids..

                          we should have been dead....

We played computers all day long, and no ones eyes rotted out. We played with roombas and robots made cars instead of killing people and us cleaning up after them. *bows to skynet*

its progression. but, the whole picture is what makes it a funny thing to look at. we look back at the dumb things we did, realize we are still alive, and how it was so different now. hard to put ideas into words...

                              Truth...

I am just thankful that I grew up in the age that allowed kids to be kids.
SURE there were predators out there, risks, dangers, etc...

There MIGHT be more predators or risks out there now, but somehow I
just don't think it is much different percentage wise. I say the risks are not much greater than way back when. Reporters want to show the
goriest story, the worst endings, the things that people fear most, so
that they sell advertisement space, more audience, and more MONEY.
They are just so hyped up now that parents feel threatened at every turn. They don't show much of the feel good stuff, the nice places, the
good normal fun, because it isn't sensational enough. The more shocking,
                              the better for sales/money...

I'm not saying that outlawing lead based paint is bad. helmets ARE good.
But in this Overly PC world, it has just gotten a little weird and constraining.

Ideally, I'd move out to a farm/rural community, and just let the kids
have FUN. But that's another thread.
