    Large earthquake hits Italy

Been watching the death toll steadily rise all morning. This isn't going to be good. Especially as it hit areas in the north which contain a lot of old buildings that have no chance of handling a quake.

            OH NO!

I spent 2 days in this town in 1999 during my summer abroad studies program for International Business and Law.

I loved this place. Very kind people, great weather too.

Now reportedly 150 killed. There is one very small town of 400 where they believe everybody could have died.

It seems they may have messed up on this one. Yeah, they say you can't predict earth quakes but evidently this guy had a very good idea it was coming. I think they are mistaken by saying you can't predict earth quakes. They really should say you can't predict exactly when, but it can be predicted it's going to occur within a recent time frame to keep the population alert.

I think part of the problem is what if you predict an earthquake and nothing happens.... Yet I'm sure some people would sue (loss of business, damage to looters etc...)

If you live in an earthquake area you should always have a plan, canned food and water for several days, emergency lighting, a radio maybe a firearm wouldn't be a bad idea either. Other than that what else can you do... Other than stand in a door way, stay away from glass and turn of your gas feed...

you cannot predict an earthquake, especially in areas where Volcanism is prevalent. Tremors occur all the time with very little consequences. Every once in awhile, you get one of these.

What they used to do in ancient italian times after an earthquake is that eveyrone would make rubble piles outside of these buildings. Then the township architect would arrive, hand out the plans, and the entire village would rebuild the buildings exactly as they were, filling in the pieces with extra bricks and etc.

It is very likely that most of these 'lost' buildings have been knocked down before and rebuilt.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
