Jury Duty
I got excused. I guess the prosecution didn't like my opinion. He obviously had no evidence other than witness testimony. I could convict on witness testimony alone, but it would have to be very good testimony from more than one credible witness with no grudge or connection to the defendant or the victim. He asked me,
"What if someone stole from me. The police caught him but he got rid of the evidence. I was able to pick him from a line up. Should he be convicted?"
Well of course he should be convicted. But what's to stop me from taking revenge on an enemy by saying they commited a crime against me? I would have to have other witnesses or evidence. He made it sound like evidence was something that you only see on TV shows like CSI. Do we really want our law enforcement to get so lazy that they don't look for evidence at all? What ever happened to inocent until PROVEN guilty?
I have a friend who was charged with a crime. The only evidence against him was the word of the victim. He passed two polygraghs (not that I put much weight on polgraphs) and the victim did have a grudge against him. I've known this guy for nearly 30 years. I would sooner believe that the Pope was cooking meth in the Vatican than believe that he did anything like what he was charged with. The charges were droped though for lack of evidence. However the police still want to think that he did something. In fact my friend used to be a police dispatcher. He was so upset over this that he had a mild stroke.
I myself have had some negative experiances with the police. I was driving down a frontage road in Houston when a cop waved me into a parking lot. He apologized and said that I wasn't speeding but he had to give out a certain number of tickets by the end of the day. He had the tickets already filled out. All he had to do was put in my info and have me sign. Stunned, I quietly took the ticket, and got back in my car. Before I could pull away, he had already waved the next car into the parking lot.
DeQuincy, LA...I am driving through town when a policeman standing next to his vehicle waves me to the shoulder. He gives me a ticket for speeding. I told him that I wasn't speeding which he ignored. I took the ticket and got back in my car. Again, before I could drive away, he was waving the very next vehicle over. In that instance, I sent a complaint to the Louisiana Attorney General. I have never gotten a reply.
I have two cousins that are in law enforcement. I know that they are honest, trust-worthy guys. But law enforcement personell are people too and are capable of everthing that anyone else is.
OK I feel better now...I just had to tell somebody.
