I think Wii is winning right now because everyone seems to want one and don't realize they are now actually available in stores, at least for the next week or two before the shortages hit again. They also don't understand just how great of a deal a Blu-Ray player at 150 is, even aside from the games.

Seriously though, most people still don't have HDTV's (or don't know that their TV is capable of outputting HD picture), plus there's still no single HD standard to replace regular DVD's with (therefore many people prefer to wait until either BluRay or HDDVD will win before buying a player for that format), not to mention Wii actually has fun games which even older people can enjoy playing, finally some people don't want to bother with reselling stuff even if it will bring them 2-3x of the profit so it is quite obvious why most people vote for Wii... Long story short, I'll vote for Wii since I'm one of the people who don't like reselling stuff (and who obviously don't need any single feature that PS3 offers) :P

I would love a high def video player but can live without until the format war ends. The $30 price of most movies on either format makes the waiting much easier.

The Wii is going to win that Amazon contest, hands down. As stated, most people don't know yet that it's relatively easy to get one, at least until Black Friday.

Well, I already have a Wii, HD-DVD is going to lose the war (note that Blu-Ray will also lose the war. There is no winner in this absurdity. But HD-DVD will lose uglier), and when you have either HD format, you've also got a built-in standard DVD player that upconverts.

Taken by itself on upconverting DVD potential alone, a good Sony model clocks in at about $110 retail. So from just that pure sense, you're getting Blu-Ray AND gaming potential for just $40 more. It's one hell of a good deal.

By the way, I don't know what you mean by your "reselling stuff" comment. Care to explain? How does that help "make it obvious" to vote for the Wii? If I were to say, get a Wii at that price, I could resell it in 3 weeks for $50-100 over normal retail price easy due to the shortages. That's not the case now with PS3, because nobody wants to pay for the frigging things at the prices they charge for them. Nobody in their right mind is buying a PS3 to try to resell it for profit.

Thrash, I agree that the price sucks on the HD discs, and if it came down to buying standalone, count me out. I've got almost 200 DVDs now and have no intention of making anything close to a full HD switch anyway. But they do go on sale fairly often because both camps are desperate, and both camps are practically throwing the free movies out at people who buy a player.

Yeah, I keep getting tempted by the 360 HD-DVD addon, because it comes with 5 free movies, which basically pays for the player right there. But I don't want to be stuck with a dead format player when this thing is over. I can live with upscaling regular DVDs, they actually look pretty good.

By "reselling stuff" I meant something like buying a useless (for majority of people, for the reasons I've explained) PS3 and reselling it on eBay for 2-3x of its price. I'm pretty sure plenty of people will still buy it for at least 2x of the Amazon's "special" price since that is what I'm seeing when I'm browsing teh eBay.
