The Earth’s magnetic field remains a charged mystery

New theory says that it is. Could mean interesting things when we're looking for world's with life out there, as having no magnetic field would pretty much mean the earth would be bathed in horrible horrible radiation, fluctuations in solar output that would play havoc with electronics, etc.

This theory only tries to explain the secular variation of the magnetosphere pole shift, not the creation of the actual magnetosphere.
