You all do realize that the kid was 2 years old! At that age you can do serious harm with very little force. The kid can barely talk and most likely was feeling a little sick or was just sleepy and cranky. Guess what, kids that age cry! It's what they do. If/When I have a kid... and if somebody tells me they are going to "quiet them for me"... they will be met by strong and violent forces for threatening to do bodily harm to my child. They will leave on a stretcher when i'm done with them.

There is a difference between spanking and slapping. The only thing spanking should hurt is the child's dignity. You never slap a child. And positive reinforcement works much better any way.

From my experience in customer service (13 years) it's usually the parents that are allowing the children to run wild or ignore some issue that is causing children to cry/scream.
Yesterday I saw 2 different parents take down a very loud & motion activated halloween decoration and scare their children with it. One of them kept waving it at her child and saying are you gonna be good?

First off I agree if someone did that to my possibly future child or a friends child I would have laid em out flat. No excuse for that. Kids throw tantrums when they are 2. Most folks try to deal with it. However if you are the only parent with the child at the store and you need groceries guess what. The kid is going to be annoying. I've seen a woman take her crying child on a flight for four hours trying everything. Was it annoying yes but, the mom was trying.
I do agree though that sometimes people let thier kids run rampant. A casual reminder along the lines of if they break that you've bought it works wonders. This is something completely different though
