    Anyone good with physics/energy?

    So I went back to college last month after a few years hiatus. I signed up for Energy & the Environment. I though, "Oh, an environmental science credit. Easy!" WRONG. I need to solve this problem:

    A car gets 20 mi. per gallon when traveling at 60 MPH. With the energy of gasoline at 36 X 10 ^ 3 watt-hr per gallon, convert this amount of power into watts.

    I don't even know where to begin. Any help would be awesome!

    Remember that you can cancel units if the same one is in the numerator and denominator.

    It is kinda difficult to show you how to do this on the computer, but if your really need I can write it out on paper and scan it.

      Lol taking physics this year wish i could help, i would guess you would take the amount of watts per galon and multiply that by the 20mi per galon

      DONT QUOTE ME ON THIS IM PROBIBLY WRONG, just taking a break from essay writing.....

        P = 60 (Miles/ hour) / 20 (Miles/gallon) * 36 * 10 ^ 3 (Watts.hour/gallon) = 108 * 10^3= 1.08 * 10^5 W

        are u sure that the energy is 36 * 10^3 though? usually people say just one digit and the rest goes as decimals: 1.5 * 10^4 instead of 15 * 10^3

                    Ah Evil, I missed your question about the 36 vs. 3.6. It says 36 on the sheet he handed us. Might be a typo, but hell, I'm sticking with what's on his handout.

                          Phantom,

                          I've found that travelling backwards in time is often possible with peanuts and beer...basically provides a shorter path to mentally believing one is on the same level with superstars like EVil...sort of circumvents the long difficult path of hard work and study.

                            I find a lot of time (especially with Engineering notation) exponentials are broken into powers of 3 (ex. 10^3, 10^6, 10^9... representing Kilo, mega, gig, etc.)

                            So that 36 x 10^3 watt hr/gallon may have originally been 36 K Watt hr / gallon.
