Talk is cheap and its a mute point since none of us were there to do anything about it. Lets not start a "we did more then you" thread.

Ya we sat on our butts when both wars started but when it came time to fight we did and we lost people just like everyone else.

Its a good post but some people are hijacking it. (including me)

I'm confused yes I maybe hijacking by not staying on the thread that canadians kick ass. I mean how much longer can that conversation go on for? Anyways what I was saying is that the way I hear some folks talk it's the US that saved the day in WWI. No I'm not saying that anit true but, some countries certainly gave thier all in that conflict. Donzi your link seems to back me up or are you agreeing with me?

Oh yeah BTW yes indeed the longest sniper kill is a Canadian team... Your right. But, it needs to be said thats good ole US o A engineering in that ole Barrett .50

Both sides were completely exhausted in WWI. The first side to collapse would lose. The Germans collapsed first. The English and French were able to hold on because of the addition of fresh American troops. And the shipping of American supplies helped too.

Don't forget about the appearance of the tank on the battlefield.

At least, once the Brits figured out how to get more than 1 or 2 of them across No Man's Land without the engine breaking down.

Yep we entered WWI a little late.

We put more boots on the ground every month then the Germans could kill.
The United States had a small army, but it drafted four million men and by summer 1918 was sending 10,000 fresh soldiers to France every day.
They managed to talk there way outa loosing Germany the first war.

              116,708 Dead Americans in WW1
              64,944 Dead Canadians in WW1
              416,800 Dead Americans in WW2
              45,300 Dead Canadians in WW2

Unless your suggestion we just lined up our troops for the Axis to shoot then the numbers don't lie.
Or are you just stating the fact that Canada did get into the wars earlier?
Or that you did loose more soldiers based on population size.

If anyone wants to read one of the best history books ever written on the subject (or for that matter ever written) of the start of WWI I highly recommend "The Guns of August".

In the war of 1812, started by the Americans, Canadians pushed the Americans back past their White House. Then we burned it, and most of Washington. We got bored because they ran away. Then, we came home and partied..........Go figure EH

Most wars have more than one reason for getting started. The Americans did not like the British stopping their ships and impressing sailors into the British Navy. The British Governor General of Canada wanted to avenge the burning of York (Toronto). The British Army that captured Washington DC was commanded by British Major General Robert Ross.

The only flak you're going to get is because you're wrong. So no skin off my nose.

Apache's right on the key points, but here's some more fine grain. Canada didn't exist in 1812 (or 1814 when Washington burned). You didn't gain indepence until what, 1867? So you were still part of the empire.

Second, your governor general had to write back home like a college kid asking for more money to get help.

Ross's troops were under the British flag (and probably did include some Canadians to the extent that all "Canadians" were British at the time...), and they're the ones who burned parts of DC.

What kind of lies are your Canadian history books teaching up there anyway?

                          -Rand

P.S. Bladensburg is in my county and we do planning and zoning for them. They're getting ready to celebrate the bi-centennial of the Battle of Bladensburg in 2014. Which is HILARIOUS because that "battle" was a complete rout that ended with the Americans running like flailing school girls away from the field.

The American Commander was Brigadier General William H. Winder and he was the worst possible choice for the job. Also most of the Americans who participated were poorly trained state militias.
