Afraid not! I guarantee the guy doing this will not be any worse than some of these knuckle head parents. Just because he taught a language that is may give the kid problems in short term doesn't mean he didn't teach the kid other things and discipline him. Plus a child can pickup language much faster than adults so he can still be speaking plain english before kindergarden.

Unless the guy is really doing something terrible to the child there is no excuse to take away their kids. I'm really getting tired of hearing that thrown around.

Apparently this is an old story. The kid's 15 now and is fine. So he got raised with an invented language? Probably helped him develop. No one would be crying foul if someone raised their kid on Esperanto.

I dont see what is wrong with either of these, like DougBob was saying, small children can learn langauges better than any other age, and it isnt like he was beating them or something strange like that.

I think it is weird that kids in highschool and above wanted(and did?) learn "elvish" when the lord of the rings movies came out.

I'm more concerned that he was using his child as an experiment either for his own benefit/testing or to further the interests of the company he consults for.

If he was doing it as an exercise in fun with his child all well and good, but this could cause some psych issues down the road. I think parents need to back out and let their kids do what they want to do, when they want to do it.

Hmmm, interesting view, I actually believe the opposite;parents aren't involved enough nowadays in discipline and structure. I honestly believe the reason individuals my age and older are more sane and competent was due to the level of responsibility and discipline that was placed on us as children.

As I've said in another thread, when I was 7 years old I was driving a super A farmall tractor in the tobacco field. 90% of the kids I see today I wouldn't trust with this responsibility.
Yeah some parents whether due to neglect or otherwise allow their kids to roam the neighborhoods at this age and in some cases gives them a better capability of independence. This isn't necessarily a good thing though since in these cases the result comes with problems later on due to the lack of attention and responsibility of work.
When I grew up the Church was also a major player in preventing idle hands. We constantly were going bowling, doing crafts, fund raisers, etc. Now aways this is getting more and more isolated to the families monetarily more capable than we were back home.
Kids are loosing interest in work and learning responsibility and are more focused on picking up the examples shown to them in movies and games.

Even if this guy was doing this as an experiment with his kid it still wouldn't have an detrimental impact like neglecting the child and allowing him to run around the neighborhood risking and potentially befriending a child molester.

I was raised by parents who were in their 20s during the 1980s, so I'm a product of the more unrestricted sect of recent parenting. However, I think I turned out fine. But hey, that's up for debate and I'm obviously biased.
