    Smoking voids Apple warranties?

Smoke Gets In Your Imac: Smoking Near Apple Computers Creates Biohazard, Voids Warranty

I smoked for 5 years, it's been a year since I quit now, and I agree it's a disgusting habit, I agreed while I smoked.

I'm not quite sure that residue in a computer counts as second hand smoke though, it's mostly the "tar" substances that build up on computers, clothing, furniture, etc, in my experience.

The question is, if someone starts a lawsuit...who wins this? America is pretty anti-smoking right now, but then again it's against a big company not providing warrant service.

Just another reason to dislike Apple. I hope they get sued.

Smoke damages all electronics as far as I know.
Ask any musician with electrical equipment that is worth his weight in salt and he will tell you how bad it is for equipment.

But this is insane, they wont work on peoples computers for fear of second hand smoke damage?
and even though the warranty does not list that anywhere, somehow it still voids it?
          RIDICULOUS
reminds me of that crappy droid phone.

Unsurprising IMO. Having worked in a PC repair shop, I hated working on the computers of people who smoked. Merely cracking open the case causes an incredible stench to permeate the room, not to mention the dust caused by the smoke accumulating over every surface. Completely disgusting.

I used to smoke a lot, pack a day or so, now I smoke 5 or less cigs a day, but never have I smoked cigarettes inside, regularly.
On rare occasions, really late and rainy or something like that.
the smoke is overwhelming inside a small room, I dont see how people do it.

What's next, not covering warranty for overweight / obese people as their fingers are heavier than average and could cause undo wear on the keys of a keyboard?
[this is where my funky sig would go. But I don't have one.

Um, well here in the city I live it's prohibited to smoke in closed public spaces, but still, people are free to smoke at their houses.
If they do not give them the warranty, for me, it's like kind of like prejudice against smokers, and I'm pretty sure smokers would win this round. Besides if the problem is having other people with second hand smoking damage they can just hire smokers imo.
Also, if Apple hadn't noticed many people smoke in the world, so they have to make it explicit in their warranty lol. About everything. They don't have to make a huge announcement, but they have to put it into their information imo.

You know that's not that unbelievable for this money hungry society.

                          Very well said Queenie.

I think what is hilarious here is the facts. I knew when I was a teenager smoking wasn't good for me. It wasn't rocket science you know, It's pretty much common sense. Now let me say for the record I'm trying to quit and I hate smoking in my car or house, it just plain stinks.
The part that really cracks me up are all these self proclaimed scientist and experts walking the street and hanging around everyones work place that talk about how second hand smoke is bad for you like it's a freaking dose of nerve gas that can kill you in outdoor air 100 yards away. I understand second hand smoke smoke is bad in an enclosed area without adequate ventilation. But it's about time these self appointed people put a freakin sock in it. I just heard on while walking by someones TV lately that now they are discussing how second hand smoke is still bad for you in open air outside.
Come on man, knock it off people. Yeah, if you're standing beside the smoker and holding your fat head beside theirs sucking in as hard as you can to get all the smoke they exhale.
Do you realize if it wasn't for all the !@#$ against smoking and the way companies in the U.S. have single handedly targeted and isolated smokers from the rest of their "diversified" work force, I would have already quit already. It has just upset me watching all the ridiculous crap going on with this subject, I just wanted to blow smoke in the snooty bastards face every chance I could get.
I understand people have tragedies in their lives with lost love ones and I understand where they are coming from. I have those loses in my family and friends too. To put it frank, blunt and clear, I don't want to freakin hear that crap as a defense to step on others rights to do what they want with their life when it doesn't affect them.
Even after I quit, I will still support smokers rights and pretty much tell any snooty !@#hole where to go when I hear them make snide comments.

NOW: Sorry I got way off topic. I'll step down and get back to this main discussion. I have worked on computers that were from smokers homes and it was terrible. With that said, I do not support apples stance of it voiding the warranty even though it makes cleaning a PC a nightmare. If they are going to do this they HAVE to state it. For the ones that are ignorant enough to do this to their computer, they have the right to have it fixed or replaced, sorry. It's just another way to scape out of it for Apple. I would recommend they include it in their warranty from now on.

If it isn't stated in the warranty, then it shouldn't apply.

I smoke as well, but like others mentioned above, always outdoors. My dad did the same when I was growing up so it was just the norm for me once I (unfortunately) started.

And yes, I've opened a smoker house's computer before. It was gross. But still, if it isn't stated, it can't be applied. End of line.
