Are you Fng kidding me. This article is pure trash making some dude to look like a thief and a whacko. I cannot believe kpho.com. First the software runs when your system is idle. Secondly the software looks at radio astronomy data looking for patterns that might indicate life. That this is even an article at all suggests two things One slow news day at the kpho. Two the school district superintendent is an idiot

I bet there is more to the story. He may just have POed the wrong guy and they used this as an excuse. I wonder if this thing he was running was like that folding at program that Staford is running?

It is exactly like Folding@home and in fact pre dates it. It doesn't DOS the system because it takes a chunk of data from a server then works on it locally. This is basically distributed computing which has been used to
              1. Show how weak the DES crypto cipher was
              2. Search for cancer cures
              3. And of course the search for radio waves of other intelligent life in the universe.

It only runs when the system is idle. The only cost is the power cost of having a system on.

I really don't understand the distinction between searching for cancer cures and searching for intelligent life the the school sup states.

"Birdwell said the massive software slowed down educational programs in every classroom and cost the district more than $1 million in added utility fees and computer replacement parts."

"computer replacement parts?" WTF its software.

and a million to get rid of it? ill write a script that removes it from every PC for 500k.
