    The nightmare is (temporarily) over

So you probably haven't seen me in your Steam friends list for the past 2 days. My internet service through CenturyLink got disconnected for non-payment, even though I use their automatic payment system. So I call up, pay, and am told my service should be re-connected in 2 hrs. Well, it's now 30.5 hrs and 10 phone calls later and I still don't have service. They're sending a tech out on Monday. Yet, my neighbor has the same service. I don't think it's an issue with the lines, someone simply forgot to do something to reconnect my service.

The solution? Took my router over to my neighbor's!

Also, I picked the worst time ever to d/l the new Steam beta client. It needed an update and when it couldn't update it wouldn't allow me to use it in offline mode; I couldn't even play my single player games.

Although I'm a fan of Steam it does have it moments. I hope you are back up to normal soon.

Just tested the neighbor's connection for TF2. Seems to be good! Therefore if this problem persists for longer than expected I should be ok.

It's a good thing your neighbor likes you.

Nope. CenturyLink. Formerly Embarq, and before that, Sprint. Before the merger that made them CenturyLink I LOVED their service. It's DSL, and the speeds they offer are quite a bit less than the cable provider in my area, which is Bright House. But, Bright House has always been a hassle. Had Bright House (back when they were Time Warner) around 2000, and then again when I moved out of the area for about 2 years from 2006-2008. Their support and customer service was awful. Brief outages were frequent.

Now as for CenturyLink/Embarq/Sprint, in the past 8 years of having their service (barring this incident) I've been nothing but satisfied. But it seems with the merger that made them CenturyLink customer service and support has gone down the tubes. That's honestly what's disappointed me the most. They were so reliable in the past but they're really dropping the ball on me right now.

The tech came out today. As I totally suspected, they hadn't re-activated my account.

                  Everything's back to normal now.

Ask them to credit your account for the days you were down.

Now let's see if they actually do.
