All UK flights grounded due to ash cloud.

Pretty sure you've all heard about the Volcano that keeps erupting in Iceland. Well the ash cloud is moving south; Way south. Therefore all flights in the UK have been suspended due to safety reasons.

All flights in and out of the UK have been suspended as ash from a volcanic eruption in Iceland moves south.

Safety body Eurocontrol said up to 4,000 flights across northern Europe would be cancelled on Thursday.

The air traffic control service (Nats) said no flights would be allowed in or out of UK airspace until 1800BST amid fears of engine damage.

The airspace restriction was the most significant in living memory, a spokesman said.

Nats suggested that the restrictions were unlikely to be lifted after 1800, saying it was "very unlikely that the situation over England will improve in the foreseeable future".

Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark were among the European countries hit.

I saw that. But better to err on the side of safety.

Definitely. All the volcanic ash can be pretty nasty when sucked through an engine.

If this volcano keeps erupting i wonder how long this might go on for.

edit: Just reading the implication if Katla blows too (and it always has in the past after Eyjafjallajokull) it could be the end of the summer for this year.

England has summer? Definitely better to ground flights and not take chances. They said on NPR this morning that ash and smoke has never caused a fatality yet, but that it has caused engine problems/failures.

Just reading the live updates now.

The volcano is intensifying. UK air traffic is closed until at least 1300BST with a high chance it won't reopen until after the weekend.

France and Poland now have completely closed airspaces.

You can follow the live updates here.

Tonights sunset looked amazing though. Thank you ash cloud lol.

Juneau may get a lot of snow this coming winter. Especially if the volcanoes dump enough ash into the air.

Apparently the UK is really pissed. After the Icelandic economic crisis, they were told to send Cash, not Ash.....

British Airways Flight 9 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The aircraft flew into a cloud of volcanic ash thrown up by the eruption of Mount Galunggung, resulting in the failure of all four engines, although the reason for the failure was not then apparent to the crew or ground control."
