    Large fireball in sky

    I saw this thing last night when I was driving the bus here in Madison (about 10:07 PM, Central Time). It looked like it was the size of a bus, actually seemed to be rotating. Orange and green flames coming off it. I had time to turn back to the passengers and say "check out that thing in the sky!". I'm going to check with a supervisor today to see if they can pull the camera's drive to see if the front one aims high enough to have it on tape.

    I highly doubt it was a meteor. I've seen plenty of meteor showers, and have never seen anything that big or that slow. Anyway, I hope I can check the video, maybe it'll be a little better than some of these.

      It was cool, but weird...I'm still curious as to what it really was. I called a supervisor just a bit ago, and he said he's going to pull the tape to see if it shows on one of the bus' cameras. I told him to let me check it out if there is anything...and if there is, I'll do what I can to get a copy, but I'm doubting I'll get that far. Anyway, I don't expect to see something like that again: it would be cool to have on vid.

                I talked to a supervisor today. The bus was on the road, so he couldn't pull the drive, but he said he should be able to tomorrow (Friday). I told him to give me a call if there is any decent footage. If that happens, I'll go to step two and try to get it on a CD. I'm really not sure how far out the bus' cameras go with any clarity, but I've heard they're pretty good.

                And, homosapien15, I'll say that I've seen plenty of meteors and have never seen anything like this. When I saw it it seemed to have a shape to it (almost rectangular) and be rotating as it travelled...with a green and orange trail of flames (first thing I thought was space station or satellite coming down). I hope that I can tell you more tomorrow, but am not counting on the quality of the vid for such a use. I'll definitely post if I find anything new on this. If not, I'll just have to say (gut feeling): meteorite my eye!

                    Yah exactly my thinking. What did it sound like? Something that big had to make a huge type of sound. No way it was quite.

                      Can't say much about the sound. I was driving the bus at the time, windows closed and a dozen teens coming from the mall (and buses are a little louder than a Lexus, for instance, to begin with)...plus I'm not sure how far it was. I didn't hear anything but the usual noises inside the bus. Also, it was really hard to gauge how far away the thing was, since I didn't know it's actual size (looked like it was the size of a bus, but then even small meteors can look big)...so I'm not sure if I would have been able to hear it anyway. I'll keep my fingers crossed that the camera has some more info...otherwise...I guess we won't know any more than we do from the news so far.

                      I'll let you know if I find out more. And I'll do my best to get access to the video if anything shows up. A lot of variables. It didn't sound like it'd be a problem to get a cd of the vid...I just have to see if what was taken is worth anything, or if it's any better than what's already been shown.

                        out today in the Arboretum, taking photos. Just before I left this military chopper flew over, heading in exactly the direction that the ball was heading.

                            Skud's gonna "have an accident" if he keeps investigating!

                            I keep looking at videos of that thing...I haven't seen many meteors in my young life, but that thing doesn't look like anything I've seen.

                            It doesn't even look like something was burning up, it was like it was glowing the whole way along its path.
