My wife tried to use this as proof that Americans do indeed love soccer. I think it's got more to do with the fact that we tend to have more disposable income than anyone, even with a recession, and as a whole are suckers for anything approaching "historic".
It's sort of like how more than 100 times the arena capacity now claim they were there when the US took down the USSR in Olympic hockey in 1980. If we do well in the Cup, you'll hear "I was there when..." from a surprising number of people.
Not really a proof, it's just that most Americans are wealthier. Not any person is going spend 10k+ to watch their team try to win. Americans will consider it one of their many, many vacations.
Money... Going to Game 7 made a Billion dollars for both the TV stations and the NBA. The best scenario by far.
The game sucked, until the last 5 minutes, but that's what people will remember.
Soccer? I referee soccer. Most adults don't want to see or associate themselves WITH soccer, but we are seeing more ADULT soccer teams. Guess they are trying to show they still have IT, but don't want to be seen Watching IT. lol
Now the World Cup, is like the Super Bowl. See and be Seen... It is a hot commoditiy, even if you aren't really interested in it. Soccer is a 1-0 kind of game for the most part. Americans like 100-98 type scores. Or Football 30-10..
