MS - killing PC gaming and letting Apple thrive

Might be an old read for some, but I happened upon it and remember well the promises that PC gamers and Dreamcast players would be able to play against one another in Quake 3. It eventually DID happen, but it was too late to make a bit of difference, as gamers moved on to the next big thing.

during the development they brought together the best console gamers to play mediocre PC gamers at the same game... and guess what happened? They pitted console gamers with their "console" controller, against PC gamers with their keyboard and mouse.

The console players got destroyed every time. So much so that it would be embarrassing to the XBOX team in general had Microsoft launched this initiative
Those of us who have been in the gaming business for over a decade know the real deal. You simply don't get the same level of detail or control as you do with a PC over a console
Gosh, I think I've written this article before!

are there not a few games that can play together?

Control? Movement is far better with a joystick than 4 keys.
otherwise we would still be using dpads. damn fanboys.

      everything else though... pc.

I agree that the joypad is preferable for sport games like madden, but that is about where it ends, for me at least. For shooters, you can't beat aiming with a mouse...or RTS: mouse and key are the key. IMO. I respect your opinion though.

Ever try and play an RTS with a console ?? Its just no do-able. Each system has its pros and cons, but its sad to see MS try and bolster their console at the expense of their PC division (again, and again, and again, and ....)

If Apple eats MS for lunch on this gaming front (OMG, I can't believe I am typing that, as it sounds like an Onion article) and successfully does it first, I would actually buy an Apple and support them moreso than MS.

The only games that would work on both console and pc at the same time are those that don't rely on precision. The problem is no matter how many times you may try to explain to the console shooter crowd that they don't stand a chance against the keyboard/mouse system, you can't convince them unless you set up a real-time competition like MS did.

Sports games are going to be far better with console controls unless the PC gamer uses game pads. The exception may be golf, like Tiger Woods games. But even that is getting better with the console because of the Wiimote and the PS 3 Move controller.

RTS--the hardcore pc guys with all the shortcuts memorized are going to dominate.

Need something else, maybe even a new genre but something that equalizes the field.

              -Rand

P.S. Oh yeah, before I forget this point--keep in my that BY FAR the most popular types of games on the PC are the casual games--Popcap, Zynga, The Sims. The stuff that non-gamers pick up and can have fun with. This is bad news for us, but it could be good news for the overall picture because THOSE types of games seem to lend themselves very well to cross-platform play. Problem is, nobody on the developer side has taken that and run with it (yet).

Knuckle heads, we've tried telling them certain games just cannot come close to play on a PC. I guess they did listen and learn but just didn't want to expose it.

                    movement, not aiming.
ONLY movement. the left joystick is better than WASD. you can hit more directions more easily than with the 4 keys.
EVERYTHING else though, pc all the way. mouse over right thumbstick for sure.
and switching between items with the numbers instead of pressing y 10 times or having half of your buttons pull out a different pieces of equipment.
it is not opinion, it is fact.

I dont mind them focusing on their consoles. The community is more readily available than on pc games, and all your games and friends from those games are right in your face, like having xfire or something on your pc.
I have always been a console gamer though.
                    they are more affordable also.
even if I were to buy a 360/ps3 when they were full price. A $600 pc wouldnt do nearly as much as your ps3 or 360. and definitely not for nearly as long as a console could/would.
I have never seen a console lose steam like a pc does just from getting old. no spyware type crap, no full hdd, just getting old?

there is my worthless 10 cents.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
