Friday turned out to be the day that I have been dreading for the last 8 years or so. We had to put our 16 year old dog to sleep because she was just completely coming apart on us. Over the years she had beaten 2 episodes of cancer and a 6 year fight with kidney disease but this last week she faded dramatically.
On her last day we got to sit out in the back yard with her and hold and pet her for 5 hours before the vet could make it out. It turned out to be the nicest weather day of the summer here and I couldn't have asked for anything better for her.
The day before we took her to the park and she rallied for an hour and was able to walk around and sniff all the stuff and ate her last good meal. The day before she died people were still asking us what breed our puppy was and saying how cute she was. She was a pom but didn't look like one because she was really big for the breed (10 lb), an unusual color (blue/grey) and we groomed her different from most poms.
My house just seems so quiet now.
