    Very sad day for Rico

Friday turned out to be the day that I have been dreading for the last 8 years or so. We had to put our 16 year old dog to sleep because she was just completely coming apart on us. Over the years she had beaten 2 episodes of cancer and a 6 year fight with kidney disease but this last week she faded dramatically.

On her last day we got to sit out in the back yard with her and hold and pet her for 5 hours before the vet could make it out. It turned out to be the nicest weather day of the summer here and I couldn't have asked for anything better for her.

The day before we took her to the park and she rallied for an hour and was able to walk around and sniff all the stuff and ate her last good meal. The day before she died people were still asking us what breed our puppy was and saying how cute she was. She was a pom but didn't look like one because she was really big for the breed (10 lb), an unusual color (blue/grey) and we groomed her different from most poms.

My house just seems so quiet now.

Ahh Rico, I'm soooo sorry. I know how devastating it can be to lose an animal. She fought a good fight and is in a better place now.
So go on, go on be your own, go on be your own star!
    A superstar in my eyes!

Oh no... sorry for you loss JohnyRico. Take comfort that she had a great life with you and your family and she gave and received lots of love. It isn't easy, I know.

My condolences. Pets are like family, but better in alot of ways. They don't hold grudges, they accect everyone as they are, and only ask for some food and a belly rub in return for unconditional friendship.

Sorry to hear that, Rico. I agree with DougBob's on Mr. MadHatter's statement.

I sounds like you did right by your companion, which is all anyone can ask. Remember the love shared. What more can one do in times like these? Take care, JohnyRico.

Thanks everybody. The cool thing tonight was that I dug up some old video of her from 1998 and I got to see her young again. I had kinda forgotten how energetic and playful she had been. The wife and I watched about an hour of video on the tiny little screen on the ol' HI-8 camcorder and it made us feel quite a bit better.

I am sorry for your loss.
I had to put my Dachshund down a couple of months ago and still miss him. It may be silly but we buried him with his bed and toys.

Thanks again everyone. We've been trying to give out all of her stuff that can be used by other families but we are still trying to figure out what to do with her personal toys/bed/collar. When my wife allows her water bowl to be removed from the floor I am sure it will have a place of honor in our home.

Best cure for a lost pet is another pet. May seem cold to get another pet so soon but it works. Just a thought.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
