We lost another war hero... goodbye Grampy Joe

Last night my wife's grandfather passed away he was 94. He survived an entire tour as a B24 pilot based somewhere in Italy. He didn't talk about the war that much be when he did he always made it a point that the oil fields in Africa were more heavily defended then Berlin itself. He was one of theses people that had a unique perspective on life which could only come from watching your friends get blown apart at altitude or by being shot down. He will be missed.

I am sorry for your loss Duke. It is people like him who keep the wolves from civilization's door.

Sorry to hear it, Duke. It sounds like he had a long, purposeful life, though.

Sorry to hear that Duke. And Troy is correct, truly the best generation of people. I'll pray for you and your family.

Sorry for your loss Duke. It's a shame that so few of that generation are left. It won't be very long until we start hearing about the oldest survivor.

My condolences my friend. This country owes a debt of honor to men like that.

Oddly enough I've had contact with another WWII bomber crew member. It turns out my neighbor across the street was a ball turret gunner in a B17.

Here is a link to his Obituary. I thought he was 94 but I guess he was 90, still a good run though.

I agree. And what an incredible person. I would have loved to had a few beers with him and hear his life story. Wow.

Joe's outlook on life was often expressed by ever-present phrase that he heard in their home, "someone's at the door, put another potato in the pot, and the bottle of Jameson on the table."
                        That is pure awesome!

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
