, Aug 20, 2010-- Australian Defense Force on Saturday confirmed two Australian soldiers have been killed and two others wounded by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan.
The two men, serving with the 1st Mentoring Taskforce, were killed when an improvised explosive device went off near their Bushmaster armored vehicle, the Defense Force announced in a press conference in Canberra on Saturday, adding that the incident occurred on Friday at 10:30 a.m. (local time).
Private Grant Kirby, 35, was on his first deployment to Afghanistan and had previously served in Iraq and Timor-Leste.
Private Thomas Dale, 21, also killed in Afghanistan, was his first deployment to Afghanistan.
The two other soldiers wounded in the explosion were flown to a military hospital in Tarin Kowt in southern Afghanistan.
This brings the death toll of Australian soldiers in Afghanistan to 20. So far this year, nine Australians have died in the war-plagued country.
News of the latest deaths has come through as Australians head to the polls for the federal election on Saturday.
