    $578M high school

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100822/..._mahal_schools

And I thought I went to a fancy high school... ...wow! Only in California. They have Champagne taste on a homeless person's budget.

I'm sure all they need to do is lay off a few police officers and they will cover the cost.

It should be nice for the kids to have mahogany desks to carve their names into...they really appreciate the finer things in life.

P.S. Cali must be trying to keep up with Dubai in outrageous architecture.

Some experts say it's not all flourish and that children learn better in more pleasant surroundings.
I think that the learning proccess depends on the kid not the enviroment. It helps, but dude, all you need is decent chairs, a good chalk board and you're done. The high school I went to is the best one in Brazil, it's costy, BUT you have THE best professors working there, and what they ask of the students is more than most colleges and universities. Still, the classrooms were tiny and I had a class with over 50 people. My prom was at the biggest hotel here and there were 750 students graduating at the party, not getting the ones who didn't participate and the 10 invited guests each one brought, and the ones who flunked the year. Environment didn't have anything to do with that. Actually my school had AMAZING programs, which is what made most students happy, not the environment. Jeez. Why don't they invest that money into studying programs, sport programs, better softwares or something. Why don't they give rewards for people with good academic development. Make more cience project availuable for people. Free movie theater tickets. I DON'T KNOW, invest in health care? MAN so many things I can think of that are MUCH better than building an expensive school. So many other ways to make people interested in going to school other than making it bigger, faster, stronger. But then again I'm from a different country with different cultural values.

            LOL:
"Nationwide, dozens of schools have surpassed $100 million with amenities including atriums, orchestra-pit auditoriums, food courts, even bamboo nooks. The extravagance has led some to wonder where the line should be drawn and whether more money should be spent on teachers."

I was talking about this as I came to this part, they definitely did not need to spend all that cash on a building, when the teachers inside the building are going to be few in number and lacking in skill.

At one of the local highschools, they added stadium lights around the pool. Water polo and diving are far from the most popular sports in the area, and the damn pool isnt even used half as much as say, the football/soccer field. or the baseball field. Those are so popular around here, traffic is nuts when there is a highschool football or baseball game. too much school spirit if you ask me. They have to make a lot of money at the foodshacks and stuff on those nights. And some bigger games, they actually SELL TICKETS!! to a damn highschool game!

            rant, sorry.

Girl, you are showing your age already ! We don't have chalkboards anymore, they have been going to whiteboards or smartboards for a few years now. In fact, we are bringing a new school online this year that recycled the old chalkboards into the schoolyards.

Talk about job security ... we switched from a Novell environment (16+ years) to a Microsoft domain setup and that involved touching 2,000+ PCs this summer. I've been working OT for a month and there is no sign of that letting up even though school opens up next Wednesday.

                Worst ... summer .... EVER !!!!

Meh, I think whiteboards are the best one I've ever used to teach classes on, but most classic universities here still have chalk boards, good thing I'm allergic and have to be taking medicine all the time. Oh, wait. But some schools are already changing into whiteboards. Good for teachers I guess. I just hope that once I start teaching for real there'll be whiteboards.

I'm totally against the use of computer for classes, from the part of the professor at least. Unless he's teaching something related to the machine itself. They just become lazy and prepare the same class for many different students. Camon, you can do better than that and write down what you're giving in the board.

                    a $50,000,000 school and 528,000,000 spare $ could feed...

over 1.4 million hungry children across the world for one year.

just a simple fact I thought of.

That is a very good point. I JUST started college, havent been to any kind of school in 4 years, and I noticed this. But I am taking computer classes, lol. But I am pretty sure they hardly say anything different to their other students with that class.

I know. But well you have to complain about it. At least I do. If I have to study for that subject, why doesn't the teacher have to too? I think they should reformulate what they teach every semester. Heck, I change my classes after preparing them every semester, every month. I think the one who has to study the most is the teacher and not the student. But hey, that's just me xD

And yeah, that's something I thought of as well P
