Even though cigarette addiction is not officially classified as a disease I personally still consider it being so - it (similarly to alcohol) impairs the normal chemical balance in the brain plus it impairs the other things like personal attractiveness (due to smelling like an ashtray and yellowing of the teeth and skin), so yea, due to all of these impairments (even if most of them are temporary) I do consider it a disease.

Hah! You try to quit smoking then without some kind of aid and stay quit. I know some people can, but there's plenty who can't, myself included. Thank god for Chantix and helping me stay quit once I quit.

Bingo. So hopefully I'm not going crazy. I'm not the only one who thinks the colloquial definition of disease is more commonly used than the dictionary definition.

All of this is kind of reminding me of the episode of Arrested Development where the Bluths are holding the fundraiser to cure Graft vs. Host, and Tobias comes on the screen and says "sure, I could just get rid of my newly transplanted hair, and I'd be fine, but that's not the point." Someone screams something along the lines of "wait, we're all here because he doesn't want to give up his hair?!" Then all of the rich people start a riot...

Maybe I just watch too much TV?

I told that to a friend of mine a few years ago and he told me that if I smoked everyday for 6 months and tried to quit I wouldn't be able too....

Smoked 2 packs a day for 6 months and I proudly say I am not a smoker. It is all in your head.

My Grandfather says the same thing, he smoked 3-4 packets a day for 50 years... Doctor told him that he needed to quit and he hasn't smoked since that day. (he took nothing to help neither... ) He said his biggest problem was that he couldn't stop reaching up to his shirt pocket to get a cigarette. lol

Its in your head. My mother doesn't believe me neither but even she says that the nicotine is completely out of your system within 48 hours after your last cigarette. I don't believe in addiction unless it involves gaming, but then it depends on the games.

I also thought that all was in your head, but there are some studies that say dopamine pathways are pathologically altered in addicted persons.

And nicotine affects the levels of dopamine, so I am not so sure that it's all in your head. Maybe there is also a percentage of chemical stuff going on there.

I am not a doctor so I can't say for sure.

To be sure, addiction is by definition something that is hard to quit. Bar, if you were to smoke for 6 months, then quit cold turkey with nary a side effect, then you were never fully addicted to cigarettes. You had a habit, then you broke the habit. As for nicotine, it has been proven countless times that it is addictive to the vast majority of its users. Some people may be affected less by it, thereby allowing them to quit with little physical ramifications.

Some people can binge drink yet still function as a normal adult, while others can have just a few beers and it turns them into raging alcoholics. I'm no expert in addiction medicine, but I do know that not everyone's physiology is the same. We all react differently to the various vices of this world, so personal experience or anecdotal evidence don't really help define the problem all that well.

Addiction is not a disease. It is chemical dependence, whether by nicotine, alcohol or dopamine. And its not something outside of the control of the addict, at least initially. Poor choices lead to poor consequences - if you're a person that readily knows you become easily addicted, then its your choice to avoid those addictive substances or suffer the consequences.

Smoking and drinking coffee are the same thing. Quit drinking coffee you will feel out of it due to loss of caffeine. You may feel side affects but addictions are still all in your head. I do understand what you are saying... The body does become dependent on certain items.. like drugs. But I am the type of person who can do something repetitively and then just stops and walks away like I never done it. I like beer... Not an addict.. I just like it.

My father started smoking when he was 12. He smoked 3 packs of Lucky Strikes unfiltered a day. More if he was driving. He quit when he was about 50 and never smoked again. I smoked but, not as much as he did by a long shot. I quit without any problems. It is called will power.
