I was working in Lake Charles, LA. We are in the end hanger with the door wide open. It was a beautiful day. As I was working, my lead came by and said a plane just hit the World Trade center. I didn't believe it at first. I look my lead square in the eyes and could see it was no B.S. I started wondering how a pilot could be so off that he would hit a building. I remebered hearing about a DC-3 that hit the Empire State Building back in the 40's due to fog. I thought it must be bad weather in N.Y. A while later my lead said a second plane had hit the other tower. One name instantly popped into my head...Osama Bin Laden. This had to be terrorism. After that everybody was looking for radios and trying to stay up to date. Then came the Pentagon. We are at war I thought. Whats next? A few moments later we were told to shut the hanger doors. The Pinkerton guys were outside doing patrols around the plant. We had an impromtu all hands meeting announcing what we already knew. We were asked if anyone had family or friends in the NYC area or pentagon. If so they were free to go home and check in on them. The rest of the day, we busted a$$ because we knew the planes we were building were going to be needed very soon. I couldn't wait to get home and see it on TV for myself.
Several things changed after that. We had Satelite TV installed in our cafeteria dining room. The security guards started toteing M-16's. And we were all changed in some way on that day.
