    FBI....DOh!

    http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2010/10/s...ng-device-fbi/

    The FBI is Tracking Whom?
They're tracking a college student in Silicon Valley. He's 20, partially Egyptian, and studying marketing at Mission College. He found the tracking device attached to his car. Near as he could tell, what he did to warrant the FBI's attention is be the friend of someone who did something to warrant the FBI's attention.
Afifi retrieved the device from his apartment and handed it over, at which point the agents asked a series of questions did he know anyone who traveled to Yemen or was affiliated with overseas training? One of the agents produced a printout of a blog post that Afifi’s friend Khaled allegedly wrote a couple of months ago. It had "something to do with a mall or a bomb," Afifi said. He hadn’t seen it before and doesn’t know the details of what it said. He found it hard to believe Khaled meant anything threatening by the post.
    Here's the Reddit post:
bombing a mall seems so easy to do. i mean all you really need is a bomb, a regular outfit so you arent the crazy guy in a trench coat trying to blow up a mall and a shopping bag. i mean if terrorism were actually a legitimate threat, think about how many **** malls would have blown up already.. you can put a bag in a million different places, there would be no way to foresee the next target, and really no way to prevent it unless CTU gets some intel at the last minute in which case every city but LA is @#$%...so...yea...now i'm surely bugged : /

I read about this last week and the article I read said that he was going to sell it on Ebay or something like that. I'm sure that would have caused him some problems down the road.

Afifi's story comes a few months after the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that law enforcement agencies don't need a warrant to attach GPS tracking units to vehicles.

That prompted Time magazine to declare that, at least in the nine western states where the Ninth Circuit Court holds jurisdiction, it is now legal for police to "keep track of everywhere you go."

The court's decision is expected to be appealed to the Supreme Court, which will either strike it down, or make it law throughout the United States.

“It seems very frightening that the FBI have placed a surveillance-tracking device on the car of a 20-year-old American citizen who has done nothing more than being half-Egyptian,” the ACLU's Brian Alseth told Wired.
Did we learn this one from China or Russia, while we were upbraiding them on their records on civil rights?

That said, his friend's e-mail on bombing malls is something that the feds probably cannot afford to ignore (but that again brings up the question, are all our private conversations tapped?); hence checking his acquaintences follows. I still say a warrant is in line...and if they say time is of utmost importance, it makes me again wonder how much of this tapping, bugging, surveilance is going on in America.

Really? I would think of it as a gift, and any profits I could make off of it going towards a good lawyer.

We're so proud of our rights as Americans, and so eager to "convert" others to our way. When push comes to shove, those rights manage to evaporate pretty darn quick though, don't they?

The post wasn't really on bombing a mall so much as how easy it is to bomb a mall. This is utterly useless. Which is the problem with the "Threat Level" and monitoring everything thing....the signal to noise ratio gets messed up

Yhea I know they did, one of the agents also congratulated him on his new job when they retrieved it. There could be more then meets the eye here and that is why they need to have a judge issue a warrant for this stuff.
