New US Army rifle

Very cool, but I think "rifle" is a bit misleading. Even if the barrel is rifled, it's an anti-personnel explosive launcher.
I was hoping this was the replacement to the M-16/M-4, but that's still a bit further out I guess.

BBC's international site has an image of this thing in full-on digital camo pattern. Pretty sweet like that--doesn't look like a nerf gun someone taped a toilet paper tube to then spray painted matte black.

Mixed thoughts on this one. Think its too expensive for what it is intended to do. On one hand, yea the walls are thick and sturdy as shiit. .50 cal cant do it in one shot, so yea..something that can be shot over a wall/ rock/ down in a ravine/ building from a distance and then detonated could be useful. But more training with a M203 instead of a day at the range could be more effective. Wonder how much each round costs too? However, what ever happened to tactics? Game changer...eh, slightly. But I dont think this will be the Oooo..! Aaahh.! next gen weapon. Think its just money going to waste and some Lt. Col is getting a promotion and on his way to the Pentagon.

Wildly expensive, yes. And, probably much less reliable. And, don't let the laser sight get too dirty. But it's a lot cheaper than the gun-toting robots rolling out in a few years.
This new weapon can replace the role of the M203, but it's more dangerous. It has inherently higher accuracy (a bonus in populated environments), and a much greater effective range (2,300 ft vs. 1300 ft for the M203).

Both (new weapon and scary, pre-evil robot overlords) are much less expensive than training a replacement for the guy who just got zapped when technology could have done his job. I've got no problem with these kind of expenses, especially when the price of the gun will likely go down now a nudge that we know how to make it.
The range was what I was going to question between this and the 203, but I didn't have time to look them up earlier today.

I remember seeing this in demos a few months back. This isn't a noob tube. It's capable of using rounds that can go off once thru the wall and exploding a variety of ordinance, shrapnel, gas, high explosive, etc. As the article says it can also be programmed to go off just before the wall, in the wall or behind. This weapon is a game changer. The rounds are high tech and it's not going to be a fire at everything weapon. It's the big daddy they bring out when they can't clear the room or building any other way.
