Don't pay your medical bills... kinda

A couple months ago I had my gall bladder removed and about 2 weeks ago we finally got the bills. We got bills from the hospital, the surgeon and the anesthesiologist and they added up to about $3,000.

On the advise of a friend we called each and said that we could pay about 65% all in a lump sum but that would be about it or we could make dinky little payments on a monthly basis and pay off the whole bill.

I thought this was a waste of time but we had told our friend we would try it.

All 3 called accepted less money just to close the bill! The hospital even went so far as to tell us that they were running a special where if you paid your bill off you got a 25% discount. Overall we saved about $900.

I would never have dreamed something like that would work. Anyone else have anything similar happen? Am I just the last person in the USA to find out you can negotiate your medical bills?

No, you're not the last. I've never thought of it.

I've been fortunate not to have to be in a position to think of it, but I hope I'll remember this for the future.

There are large insurance discounts that you get when you have insurance. When you pay cash they charge you the inflated rate compared to insurance. Most of the time (for people w/o insurance) the hospital doesn't get paid at all. So if you offer to pay some they jump at it.

Ive seen this with debts of many kinds as well. Old hospital bills, credit card bills or whatever, get sold to some collection company(scoundrels) and they can be negotiated with pretty well from what I have seen/heard.

My mom squashed a $2000 bill by paying $1000 very recently. She was extremely happy.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
