NYE Fireworks. London wins this year!

Now i'm not usually one to gloat but for once we finally beat the Aussies NYE fireworks display. ?1.6m worth of fireworks FTW!

For the past few years London's display has been horrible. But last night? WOW!!!! It's finally being synced to music too which should have been done since the begining.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VO_MGV25wyA&hd=1

Apparently the engineers behind this display are in the running to get the job for the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony. After this display i really hope they do.

It's probably best to watch at YouTube with the larger video resolution.

If you can't be bothered to watch the whole thing, but i suggest you do, the amazing finale starts at roughly 7 minutes 20 seconds in. I've never seen anything quite like it and i imagine peoples ears were ringing like crazy by the end.

On another note; does the US have NYE displays like this? You never hear of any across the pond so i'm presuming you don't?

I haven't heard of any competition over here but congrats on the win.

We have a lot of NYE fireworks displays, but nothing as elaborate as London or Sydney. Part of this is due to our locations--we don't have much nearly as iconic a setting as the Millennium Wheel or Sydney Harbor Bridge. In NYC, people fill up Times Square, where the buildings make it almost impossible to see a good display unless it was right overhead.

Chicago and San Francisco are probably our best bets for something this epic. DC if there is enough advertisement, since those happen right over the Washington Monument.

Disney World's display at the Magic Kingdom is probably the closest we get without extra special effort.

It's not a competition. But every year Australia 1ups pretty much everybody, and London usually lags behind.

              Not this year though.

On a video related note. Blur - Song 2 and Beatles - Luci in the Sky With Diamonds go very well to fireworks.

I always thought it would be cool to see the fireworks set off on the rooftops of lower manhattan. Then maybe open up a viewing area opposite. Maybe brooklyn or similar. Would be a bit of a copy of Hong Kong and Taipei but it would probably look cool.

Or how about a display being done on Liberty Island? That would be a perfect setting.

Oh, they COULD do it like these, but they won't. Almost a million people a year hang out in Times Square, and they just wouldn't be able to compete with that and make it worth the expense and effort.

Now we have had a lot of flooding in this area and there are still a lot of houses that have not been repaired. Must be the apocalypse.
