    Suggestions on Shotguns

Well my wife used to own a horse and ride. She took a break a few years back and loaned her horse (Ruby Jean) to a therapeutic center. Two years later she decides she wants Ruby back and she going to start riding again.

This is great news..... In case you didn't know horses are friggin expensive. Board, vet, farrier, training, classes and events... The reason this is great news is now I can buy more firearms..... I already have my eye on a CMP M1 Garand. I would like to also pick up a shotty. I'm thinking more for home defense but, the one time I shot skeet it was a blast and I wouldn't mind it pulling double duty in that regard. I happen to be fond of tactical black firearms and I think I want a semi-auto shotty but, I love to hear anything you guys have to say on the subject...

I can't recommend any shotguns but I'm glad to see that I'm not the only who trades budget items in this manner.

Remington 870. There are plenty of parts so if you want to use it for home defense you can get tactical stocks or if you want to use it for skeet get one with the 28" barrel.

Another alternative is Mossberg and Ithaca, I currently own the Mossberg 500 28" barrel and love it. I owned an Ithaca Featherlight bottom ejection glowing up until it was stolen and loved that one also.

        Mapes,

Here is what I have: FN SLP Mark I (self loading police) shotgun. It's got a 22" barrel, which makes it a little longer than the minimum legal 18", but that, to me, has more good than bad things about it. For one, it'll hold 8 2.75 inch rounds plus one in the chamber, secondly, there is plenty of spread with the standard cylinder choke with a 22" barrel, plus you can get a little tighter grouping at some range. Lastly, it is, as they say, the world's fastest cycling semi-auto shotty, and the action reduces recoil quite a bit, which is fine with me when using slugs or magnum buckshot loads. Watch the "action vid" on the link to see one popping off a few rounds. It is a very sweet gun for the price.

I have a Remington 870 and love it. Well built, tons of parts for it. I also use mine for skeet / home defense.

Here I am in south dakota with my 870 shooting some skeet in a field.

Yep yesterday was kinda funny actually. My Safariland tactical holster for my HK USP with light came into the shop and my wife had to head up to San Francisco to help her sister with a wedding dress. I also had to swing by a friends house and fix they're wireless router. My friends are a married couple ...The husband owns guns and the wife has horses. When I showed up at they're house they started laughing because my wife had called for info on any good horse tac shops in the North Bay Area. They thought it was so funny that that day my wife was going shopping for horse stuff and I was at the gun shop.. I looked at them and said "yep...it's on like Donkey Kong"

Lol. They make good guns. I looked at the M4...I don't see anything that makes it worth $600 more.

The only thing that makes me hold off on the SLP is the after market options seem limited. From what I can tell there is no after market stocks for it???

That is quite possible. The bolt from the carriage assembly slides back into the stock where there is a recoil spring to kick it back out. Perhaps other companies haven't tried to build after markets for this reason, or perhaps FN doesn't want/allow them to do so. I haven't checked it out. Putting a pistol grip on it (like I did with my 870) would limit it's functionality (aim down sights) and balance (too much weight and length in front end with 8 rounds in magazine, and nothing on back)...and the folders I've had in the past add some aesthetic appeal but few real benefits as most cases I aim down sights.

I got my Remington 870 Magnum at Markelys, I love it. Easy to clean(bore snakes are awesome), easy to use, and very fun as well.
You could probably get the longer barrel, and a tactical stock. As DB said, there are many aftermarket parts, and even at Markelys, they have a few models, I know for sure they have tactical one, I saw it when I went there, and in the background of your interview.

Oh wow, that self loading SLP is beautiful. Looks a bit more modern than an 870, but not lame like a Benelli.

870s are great, all you'll ever need. As I mentioned in my last post I do have one that I put a pistol grip on...it's an 870 camp gun...it's green...I call it the hulk, lol. Great gun, and it is a little shorter which makes it perfect for the pistol grip and close quarters. For slugs and a little more range, however, I wanted a slightly different setup, which is why I got the SLP. I wouldn't get rid of either of them: they each do their job very nicely.

Had a 30in for duck hunting, a shorty for quail and open choke.
I actually had better aim because of the pumping feature.
And relatively inexpensive compared to the specialty shotties.

The kick never bothered me, even when i was shooting off the hip when qualifying for my badge. And I'm not a big man.

Pay double or triple for a semi or specialized shotty. You go for it. I won't. But then I'm Frugal.

Is this a story you can convey, or would you have to invoke the Fifth Amendment?
