In the wake of recent stories about dumbass families getting lost in the woods trying to find the perfect tree, I've been reflecting on what the media chooses to cover, or not to cover. It's almost like they've got a secret meeting place where they convene every quarter and determine what the big story trend will be. Any media issues? Post them here.
But a few observations on American media:
Extensively Covered no Matter What:
1. Young, attractive white women who disappear. Old? Fat? Male? Ugly? Non-White? Tough, you're up a creek.
2. The latest antics of skankish C and D list "celebrities" between the ages of 16 and 25.
3. Got a holiday? Let's have our "Christmas lines/Thanksgiving turkey farm/Easter egg roll/St. Patty Day bar/Holiday Travel" stories.
4. The latest on the "engaging" U.S. presidential race. Nothing like starting a story a year and a half before the first primary and carrying on each day like it's the biggest thing to happen since ever.
Cyclical Coverage:
1. Shark attacks.
2. Dumbass lost families looking for trees.
3. El Nino.
4. OMG! Two weeks of Rain/Snow/Ice in the Northeast/Midwest/Northwest/Southeast/Southwest!
5. Funny/stupid bank robbery streak of the month.
6. Random acts of unusual types of violence that supposedly form a "new" trend.
7. Blasphemy! Don't bring your 10 commandments into my school/government building. "You got your religion in my government!" "Oh yeah, well you got your government in my religion!"
Not Covered Enough:
1. Anything outside the States that's not in Iraq. Especially Afghanistan, Darfur, the Asian Co-Propherity Sphere, Putin's excesses, and European Union politics.
2. Just about anything inside the States that doesn't include the above. ESPECIALLY: the status of infrastructure in the wake of the Minneapolis bridge collapse.
3. The economy. You hear about it, especially the housing market, but we're not hearing enough of just how close to the edge it is at the moment. Any event of significance will throw us into recession (terror attack in the U.S., another natural disaster of a Katrina level, etc.). Continuing trends will put us there in a bit longer period of time.
4. The continue dumbening of da 'Merican peeples. Gets us some maps sos we can halp the childrens.
