    Let's Talk About the Media

In the wake of recent stories about dumbass families getting lost in the woods trying to find the perfect tree, I've been reflecting on what the media chooses to cover, or not to cover. It's almost like they've got a secret meeting place where they convene every quarter and determine what the big story trend will be. Any media issues? Post them here.

But a few observations on American media:

    Extensively Covered no Matter What:
    1. Young, attractive white women who disappear. Old? Fat? Male? Ugly? Non-White? Tough, you're up a creek.
    2. The latest antics of skankish C and D list "celebrities" between the ages of 16 and 25.
    3. Got a holiday? Let's have our "Christmas lines/Thanksgiving turkey farm/Easter egg roll/St. Patty Day bar/Holiday Travel" stories.
    4. The latest on the "engaging" U.S. presidential race. Nothing like starting a story a year and a half before the first primary and carrying on each day like it's the biggest thing to happen since ever.

    Cyclical Coverage:
    1. Shark attacks.
    2. Dumbass lost families looking for trees.
    3. El Nino.
    4. OMG! Two weeks of Rain/Snow/Ice in the Northeast/Midwest/Northwest/Southeast/Southwest!
    5. Funny/stupid bank robbery streak of the month.
    6. Random acts of unusual types of violence that supposedly form a "new" trend.
    7. Blasphemy! Don't bring your 10 commandments into my school/government building. "You got your religion in my government!" "Oh yeah, well you got your government in my religion!"

    Not Covered Enough:
    1. Anything outside the States that's not in Iraq. Especially Afghanistan, Darfur, the Asian Co-Propherity Sphere, Putin's excesses, and European Union politics.
    2. Just about anything inside the States that doesn't include the above. ESPECIALLY: the status of infrastructure in the wake of the Minneapolis bridge collapse.
    3. The economy. You hear about it, especially the housing market, but we're not hearing enough of just how close to the edge it is at the moment. Any event of significance will throw us into recession (terror attack in the U.S., another natural disaster of a Katrina level, etc.). Continuing trends will put us there in a bit longer period of time.
    4. The continue dumbening of da 'Merican peeples. Gets us some maps sos we can halp the childrens.

In the NFL if some asshat runs onto the field the camera cuts away and the announcers make sure you know that you will never get any face time on national tv for that sort of thing. Take a gun to school and shoot 10 people and the media plasters your face on every channel and dissects your pathetic suicide/revenge note for hours.

There is a not-so-fine line between discouraging attention-seekers by ignoring them and having a news report about an important, if tragic, event. I'm pretty sure killing 10 people crosses this line, and the media shouldn't ignore it as if it's a guy who wants attention at the football game.

However, I agree w/ Duk.. er... Rand's general impression that the media sensationalizes only certain subjects - it would be nice if they spent more time talking about important issues and less time talking about celebrities.

People are getting lost while looking for Xmas trees? That's the funniest thing i've heard of in a while.

Our news is pretty good. We accept that there is indeed places outside of the UK and Iraq. I guess that's why the BBC and SKY are considered to be at the top in this field.

I think you pretty much covered it all Rand, and I completely agree with all of your topics and groups up there.

My problem with the media in this country is twofold.

1/ It has become pure editorial over reporting.

            2/ Obvious political bias

BBC World kicks ass. As does the website.

now yes the media does print it but a lot spawns off of the consumers.
news is more likely to cover a topic that will sell papers then something important.
yes both the newspapers and consumers play their individual roles but doesnt this reflect onto society as a whole. We live in a fast and loose america. if its entertaining we will flock to try to avoid the rest of this world and the problems with it.
we do here on the news this happened here or this is going to happen everywhere but people feel disconected because its "somebuddy else's problem". not that everyone should be activists but people should be better informed about things that matter in this world. not the new pregnant 16 year old, or the latest celeb adoption.
                  america these days

The media is manipulative, and causes us to think certain ways about certain things because they innacurately portray things.

                    Examples:

Women are objectified, and are almost forced to think that they have to do certain things, and look certain ways.

People with Depression are portrayed as dark, lonely, sad, people with no social interation, thus stereotyping people.

Muslims in the media are protrayed as terrorists who want to "run the infidel out of the holy land", when there are a lot of Muslims who believe and actually practice democracy, and what to kill all the terrorists, but they are either not able to, or are afraid to do so. Not all of them are bad, some are very good, and wantbto make world a safer place to live.
We work in the dark, to serve the light. We are Assassins.

Nothing is true. Everything is permitted.

News needs reported but we inadvertantly glorify the criminal. Report the 10 dead but don't keep plastering the shooters face all over tv and magazine covers. I think it just encourages the next would be shooter who just wants to go out loud and famous.
