Homemade dams to hold back the Missippi.

This look pretty cool, Having had just 3 to 4 inches of water in my basement was a huge problem I can't imagine flooding out totally, it's good to see that some were able to save themselves.

It looks like they either know someone with a front endloader or have the cash to hire. Regardless, I'd move out of that flood plain ASAP.

yeah, i wouldnt want to live anywhere near the mississippi unless i somehow was on at least a 50-60 ft hill. even then, still build my crap on some serious stilts.

or, just not live there, denver is nice.,

My college Geology Professor always said, "Anyone who lives in a flood plain should expect to be flooded out". He suggested that when buying a house you check on that, before buying.

Everyone should check on floodplain before thinking about buying, but 2 things to keep in mind:

              1. The 100-year floodplain is being re-evaluated by FEMA nationwide, and modified based on current conditions. Most currently-mapped floodplain is based on the previous surveys.

              2. FEMA floodplain (and as defined by insurance companies) are only designed for the 100-year storm, meaning there is a 1% chance in any given year of flooding to the full extent of the floodplain. We're dealing with 500-year storms and flooding more and more often lately. If that were to be calculated, the floodplain area would be far larger in most locations.

I live at the top of a large rise and do not have to worry about flooding. Unless Noah shows up.

My grandad always said the same. Because in Spain, certain people tend to build their houses near rivers, and no matter how much time passes, it can be 10 years, 50 years or 100 years but that river that floods will flood again at some point. I have seen it with my eyes, and have seen how tragic it is for those who lived there.... but time passes, people forget and again you can see them living next to the river....
And I always remember what my grandad said, you can stop fire, water on the other hand....

It is idiotic the way they have built up levies all along the Mississippi and built houses in what should be natural floodplains. It just makes matters worse. If there weren't levies all along the river, the flooding wouldn't be so bad in MS. The floodplains are meant to allow the river to shed the extra water.

That reminds me of an old joke.
Two New Yorkers meet down in Miami Florida. The first one says that he is retiring in Miami because his factory burnt down and he decided not to rebuild. The second says that he was doing the same thing but his factory was destroyed in a flood. The first asks the second, "How do you start a flood"?
