The crazy things we would do when we were young.
This was not as crazy as it sounds. You would toughen specific parts of your body to with stand shock and pain. This is done, not by tearing down the body. (ie the mistaken belief that you had to break your knuckles by pounding a Makiwara "a 2X4 set in the ground with some padding that you punch") The proper use of a Makiwara was to build up calluses over your knuckles that protected them when hitting a hard object.

I think they do that with Muay Thai. As part of their conditioning they kick stuff with their shins over and over and over...
You are not trying to break the shin. You are actually building callus to help pad the shin. That and increasing your tolerance to pain.
